Are shorts worn by people in any region of Italy? I can rememeber many of the older Italian born people here in the USA that I know used to tell me that in Italy people didn't wear shorts. Is this true or perhaps the fashion trends have changed?

Well fashion and habits changes every year.
It is not unusual to see people wearing shorts in summer, (speaking of Rome)

About older people, here in the South many of them tend to cover themselves much, they also often wear long sleeves in summer (and here it's hot). So I would suppose that it's the remaining of a long tradition, but I can't be sure.

Well, I don't know about Italy, but just yesterday I saw an old Italian man waring shorts here in DC.

I agree "fashion" or better to say habits changes every year.

I think that the way that Italians dress is probably much more traditional than Americans and Australians. I haven't been to Italy in summer for a long time, but it's certainly hot enough for shorts!
