I agree with Paolo. You do not need to standout to pickpockets etc. And martha is right about jeans. Also Americans tend to wear their shirts tucked in and wear baseball caps. My husband reminded me that he always sees Italian men walking with their hands clasped behind their back.

On another note...this is my 1000th post...where do I pick up my prize?

If your goal is to try to look or dress like an Italian while in Italy then you must buy your clothes/shoes in Italy. You will never pass for Italian with clothes/shoes bought in the U.S. unless of course if you can find somewhere where they sell Italian clothes. Whatever you do don't wear shorts unless you're at the beach.
When I lived in Italy I bought my clothes at Italian clothing stores. I just copied the way I saw Italians dress. In the Winter/Spring don't try to dress like as if it were summer.

I have just returned from a weekend in Lovere and was spoken to on two separate occasions by the locals asking for something. They thought I was Italian, even though I sure don't look like one. And I was wearing jeans, (so was my italian partner), boots, jacket and scarf. The stuff I wear at home too.

I have never been to Italy but I am guessing that the way people dress probably varies from region to region like many other things do.

Hello,
I think you have to only wear any normal dresses and not to wear any extraordinary dress normally dress like your country first look some pics of italian dresses then go there.
good luck!!
