Hello all.

I'm digging up this old post to point you all to a few interesting videos made by an Italian girl.
While she's not a professional teacher, I think that her videos may be useful and she should be praised for the effort.

This is the first video:

you can find the other lessons by going at her profile page:

Molto carina. Mi piace la sua voce.

Ancos, What part of Italy is she from and or what regional dialect does she speak?

In one of the comments on the first video she says she's from Ferrara, in the Emilia Romagna region.

She pronounces the "s" and "z" in a very similar way. They both have a long "sssss" sound. Typical way of pronouncing those two letters in that region.

One of the things that most fasinates me about Italy is the dialects. Not so much the different
languages(that also is interesting though)but the dialects of standard Italian and
how they are spoken in different parts of Italy.

La lingua toscana in bocca romana.(Lah LEEN-guaw toss-KAH-nah in BOW-kah row-MAH-nah) The elegant ideal for spoken standard Italian became
“la lingua toscana in bocca romana” (“the language of Tuscany as pronounced by a native of Rome”)

Ancos, do you agree with this?

Dialects, or better, the various nuances in pronuncing the same words, are an integral part of Italian regional identity.

It is true that the "perfect Italian" used to be the Tuscanina Italian, slightly changed by the Romans pronunciation.

What happened basically was that TV taught us to speak a "standard italian".
The first tv sets where expensive and only rich families or public places like bars and restaurants could afford one. Lots of people would gather to watch the shows and listen to the news. So even if few owned a tv, everybody was watching it.
By listening to the language spoken by newscaster, actors, hosts of shows, everybody was finally able to listen - and learn - the "standard Italian".

The funny - or not so funny - part is that today many popular sitcoms and tv movies feature characters with very strong regional accents and dialects. Mainly the Roman one and the Naples one.
So the same TV that taught our grandfathers to speak proper Italian is promoting heavy use of dialect to our nephews

Grazie Paolo! Generalmente una bella idea d'imporare l'italiano in questo modo (con i video della vita in italia).

E in particolare questo video e' molto umoroso
