Olympics, what you call soccer is the REAL football.
Anyways, the sport you mean by football is not popular at all in Italy, I don't think he does exist at all.
Only US are fond of American Football.

Soccer IS football! Everyone in the world knows that. The other is AMERICAN FOOTBALL. Which you'd think is a bit weird as they don't really use their feet when playing... Do they?

This message brought to you by a very sleep deprived student. Ciao!

They do for the "extra point", "field goals", "punting" and the "kick-off".

You're basically correct though. In American Football the "foot" is used very rarely, like less than 5% of the time.
I'm actually a huge fan of both and watch Italian soccer as well as American football.
I think one of the reasons soccer will never be a real major sport in America is that here they like sports that have a lot of scoring. They don't appreciate a 1-0 or 2-1 match, and after a while they lose interest.
American football is a very violent sport, which appeals to the masses, but there are many stoppages of play. A 60 minute game lasts three hours on the average.
I once taped a game and later watched it. After skipping all the commercials and huddles, the actual playing time was 19 minutes..

Well, I suppose I'm not hopeless after all!

Yes, there is not much scoring in soccer. But it's crazy when you watch an intense game! It can really get to you! I don't watch much myself, but when I have (once or twice, really...), it was almost overwhelming!

there is a good book by John Grisham (the Firm, Pelican Brief) called Playing for Pizza. Its about an American Football player who gets run out of town and ends up playing in Italy in the league that the poster mentioned above. The names of the teams are pretty much the same.

In this league only American players are paid, and the Italian players, who take it very seriously, play for.....pizza....and beer after the games.

The American player who never wanted to go ends up appreciating Italy and Italians. If you love Italy and like sports, you would like this book. Its a quick read too.
