Default Driving license question

Hey,

I'm from England and I pretty much hate it here. As soon as I'm able to, I'd love to be able to move abroad, possibly to Italy.

One question I have though, is whether or not my UK driving license would be valid in Italy indefinitely. If not, would I be required to take the Italian driving license in order to obtain an Italian driving license?

Cheers

- Rich

Ehi,

In the states we have an international drivers license that can be purchased through an automobile club. Perhaps UK has one too. It makes our american license ok in Italy. You could then buy a new one each year if you return home for a visit.

Hi Rich

Yes, your UK driving licence is valid over here for the same period as in the UK. It is best to have the European model photocard licence though. Do remember that the photocard expires after 10 years (just needs renewal with a new photo) even though the licence itself may run until you are 70.

If you want, you can exchange it for an Italian licence - you just need a medical/eyesight exam and pay a few euros.

To clarify: in the states, you can get an international driving permit, good for 1 year from the date you get it.

This can be a bit flexible however. I got mine last week, but I wont be traveling to Italy until October.

However, AAA Club dude was able to "activate" mine up to 90 days from the day I got it.

So, mine starts in August, and is good for 1 year after that.

However, I have gone to foreign countries before and never needed a international drivers permit to rent a car...I only got it 'cause I thought it would be cool.
