Default New Speed Monitoring System operational on Tangenziale
by Danno 02-18-2009, 08:10 PM

The Tutor traffic monitoring system became operational last week on the Naples Tangenziale. Tutor tracks the average speed over various tracks of Italian highways. It works by tracking vehicles over relatively long distances and calculating the average speed. The system recognizes the class of vehicles and and it works in rain and fog. The installation of the Tutor on the "Tange" cost euro 900,000. The speed limit on the Tange is 80 kilometers per hour (50 MPH).The fine will be from 148 euro to 2,000 euro, if the limit is exceeded! There are 300,000 vehicles daily on the Tange and on the first day the system was operational, 10,000 drivers were caught speeding by the new system. The same system will be adopted for the Domiziana later this year.

Now if anyone has ever driven the Tangenziale ( I did every day for 3 1/2 years) you will know that the excess speeding can only be done in certan hours, otherwise your sitting in traffic with the 299,999 drivers! Hopefully they will use the money for trash removal

Did you find driving in Salerno much better than Naples?

Frank, I never really drove in Salerno, the closest I ever got was Vietri because I always started my Amalfi Coast drive from there. I found it much easier to drive back towards Naples.
I'm glad they didn't have that system in when I was there or I'd be broke!

Yes ...

I drove thru Salerno on the A3 many times which then becomes the A1 heading to Rome. I found traffic slow downs in that area were due to road construction. I was very surprise on my first visit how fantastic the highway road conditions were. Especially, in Calabria where I expected the roads to be bad, but they turned out to be better than most roads in North America.

Frank, I guess if the Romans invented the roads they should be good!
Actually most of the roads in Italy are pretty good and the macadam they use seems to be more porous than they use here in the states, it absorbs water more easily. Too bad they have to throw trash all over the place.
Speaking of roads, one day the road crew were painting new white lines . There was a dead dog by the guard rail and instead of removing the dog, they painted right over him!True story.

Ok I suppose I'll be more careful when I go to Naples, although I can hardly remember of a day where 80Km/h was a possible speed.
