| | Michelangelo sketch found
A sketch by Michelangelo for the dome of St Peter's Basilica, possibly his last design, has been found in the basilica's offices, the Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano said. The drawing, for stonecutters working on the dome, was reportedly dated 1563, the year before his death. "The sureness in his stroke, the expert hand used to making decisions in front of unfinished stone, leave little doubt the sketch is Michelangelo's," the paper wrote. It said many drawings were destroyed by the artist, but this survived because a stonecutter used it to make notes about transporting stone into Rome.

Buongiorno MG66!
Welcome to the Forum.
How exciting about the sketch, isn't it? I read about that in our local paper, of all places.
Where in Rome are you a tour guide?
I had a job offer to do that once... I turned it down, much to my on-going chagrin.

Teresa | Buon Giorno a te Teresa... e Buon Anno!
I work very often at the Vatican Museums but not only...I can do my job almost anywhere in Rome...
Why did u turn down the job offer? In my opinion being a tour guide is great, I enjoy it a lot, it can be tiring cause u have to walk and talk a lot, but I really like it

| | To Tour or not to Tour
I decided not to be a tour guide in Rome for a number of reasons... sometimes I think I was crazy NOT to...
Still, with my Master's program in full swing at the time of the offer, realizing I had to figure out what to do with my house... my dogs... etc... it seemed the best choice to stay here. I'm glad I made that decision, ultimately, but...
I am envious, though! What's your favorite place to do tours?
Teresa

Teresa | ... about my favorite place, it's hard to choose only one site...
generally speaking I prefer walking in the streets rather than walking through halls and rooms in a museum... maybe because museums appear to me as artificial collections of art objects made to be placed somewhere else... of course I understand the reason why museums exist but i prefer something else... just think about the Pasquino statue, the most famous statua parlante (talking statue) in Rome that still stands there from centuries and that is still used by locals to leave satirical massages against our politics... it cannot be considered a fine piece of art, but is surely a living piece of history
And what about Caravaggio's paintings... you can find them in pictures galleries or where the commissioner and the artist intended them to be placed... in this case they still keep a stricly connection with that place, a connection that is lost within museums
But I want answer your question, maybe one of the places I love the most is the Basilica of San Clemente, not far from the Colosseum

| | The Basilica of San Clemente
Oh... I have heard of this Basilica and have never been there, though I will.
There are so many places I have yet to visit in Rome... I spend weeks there at a time, and I savor every moment, and I love wandering the streets and entering whatever church or building my feet lead me to. In this way I have turned the corner and 'discovered' the Trevi Fountain... I have entered seemingly non-descript churches and found beauty so intense that I couldn't breathe fora moment, and I have been lured by music and laughter into restaurants unseen from the streets.
Often I wonder if I am missing out on things I would love - but then I realize... Rome isn't going anywhere, and I will return. I'd rather spend my days discovering new and fascinating and exciting things all day, than try to rush and fill my days with too much to do and see and remember.
Every time I am in the city I fall in love again, and every time I find something new and wonderful to explore.
The Basilica of San Clemente is most definitely on my horizon, and I will make it a point to get to it next time.
Thanks for reminding me of it!
I think I would agree that being outside and walking and guiding tours would be preferable to being inside all the time. Though I love museums, there is indeed a magic to seeing the art and sculpture - the history - in the place for which it was created.
Teresa
