I don't have an answer for you, but you might just be what I have been looking for! I am considering the purchase of an old ancestral house in Italy, and would love to communicate with anyone with renovation experiences, stories both good and bad, hints, tips and warnings. Haven't bought yet, but I am pursuing negotiations.
I would much appreciate any reply if you have the time or inclination. Thanks!
Paul

Thanks for the timely reply. I do speak Italian, though I am not fluent. Too many forums to view. House is most certainly habitable, but I don't know of any classifications. It had been occupied until six to eight years ago. Roof in urgent need of repair, some water damage to the interior plastering upstairs, but most of the rest of the house is nicely intact. I am certain that wiring and plumbing is not up to current code, but functional. House is in Friuli. My grandfather was born and raised in the house, grandma in a house nearby. I have a strong emotional tie, and I am trying to be objective and not let my emotions overly influence me. Forum suggestions? Thanks again

If the house is habitable it should be sold with a Certificate of Conformity for each of the services connected. Best route to take would be to engage a Geometra to do a survey - even minor rennovations can be costly. Best of luck to you both.
