Default The real Meaning of "cello"

Mark and I were discussing the meaning of cello other than a big violin. It is at teh end of limoncello and his town of Castiglioncello. Down in the Amalfi coast I have heard limoncello called limonciel, is that a derivitive of cielo? or sky? Any ideas?

It's just a suffix added to words ending in -one or -ona and means the thing you're speaking about is tiny or cute. I suppose limoncello impolicitly means the liquor is nicer than the lemons it derives from

Varianti: –cello (De Mauro Italian Dictionary)

As most probably you may already know, italian adjectives and nouns may be modified adding different kind of suffixes, with different meanings:
1) accrescitive (accresitivo)- the suffix is -one/a if you're referring or describing something big: libro--> librone, scatola--> scatolona/e, letto--> lettone.
2) diminuitive (diminuitivo) - the suffix is -ino/a with opposite meaning respect to the former; refers to something small: libro--> libricino, scatola--> scatolina, letto--> lettino
3) pejorative (dispregiativo) - the suffix is -accio/a when you're speaking about something ugly or evil: libro--> libraccio, scatola--> scatolaccia, letto--> lettaccio, soldato--> soldataccio
4) vezzeggiativo (sorry, don't know the english translation) - the suffix may be -etto/a or -ello/a and denotes something usually not very big but cute and nice: casa--> casetta, libro--> libretto, furfante--> furfantello, partita--> partitella.
The words ending in -one/a are modified using the variant -cello/a. For example, castiglione (an almost unused synonym of castle, fortress) becomes castiglioncello (by the way, hence probably the name of the town).
