Ciao Aussie Chick + Phil
Marcello is convincing and fun. However he points out movies that are available in the International market - I do not believe Italians in Italy would pick the same set of movies ( I would not ).

Pane e Tulipani for example is a recent comedy that is available in the international marked and he does not mention - With Troisi the Postman was good but Ricomincio da tre was a masterpiece etc .... Ladri di Biciclette: I think it is dated and slow but I have not seen it in a long time - I rather watch comedies however.

PS My preferred Australian movies is Strictly Ballroom.

thanks Paolo for your reply, Yes Strictly Ballroom is a great musical and dance script very popular and entertaining. The recent Australia movie with Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackson truly shows the authentic Austalian panorama and history it's magnificent and I can see why all those years ago my father fell in love with Australia never returning to live in Italy.

AussieChick. I recon that the movie "Australia" was a flop, all because of Nicole Kidman. What a woos she is, all blue eyes and blond hair. They shoulda got Barry Humphries to play the part. Then we would have had a movie!

Italian movies are far and few between on SBS, don't you think, even though Italian is the second most spoken language in Australia.

Hi Aussie Phil you are possibly right with Barry Humphries as the leading female would have given Australia the movie a comedic appeal. I was'nt aware that Italian is the secound most spoken language here in Australia. SBS does'nt show much of anything of great sigificance other than the daily news of the current demografic majority of migrant's in Australia.

Hi AussieChick,

I think that Chinese is the second most spoken language in Australia. Italian is probably third! It is supposed to be the easiest language to learn so I must start!

I disagree with your comment DDB regarding Chinese being the secondmost spoken language in Australia. Actually there is no such language as Chinese.
There are "Chinese" languages, mainly Mandarin and Cantonese, and if they are lumped together they do slightly outspeak Italian in Australia.

According to Wikipedia, the ranking of languages spoken in Australia is
English, Italian, Vietnamese, Greek, Cantonese, Arabic, Mandarin, Serbian.

Regarding Italian being easy to learn. I've just returned from a five week visit to Italy. I spoke to lots of people there who told me that well spoken Italian is difficult, so difficult that many native Italians use bad grammer.
Therefore they well accomodate foreigners like me who speak it badly.

I actually found German easier to learn than Italian at evening classes and complete all the textbooks and tests etc. However, when I put my language skills into practice overseas I find that my rudimentary Italian gets me much furthur than my German. The true Italians are more accepting of badly spoken Italian than other Europeans.

However...If you are visiting Italy as an economy class tourist, you will find that most of the people that you deal with are not native Italians. All of the lowly paid positions in the service industry are taken up by immigrants such as Poles, Bangladeshis, Africans etc. All of whom have English as their second language, and Italian as a rather poor third cousin. And somehow all the Italian that one has studied is useless.

I would not say that Italian is easy to learn, but I will say this:-
A smattering of Italian will get you a lot furthur in Italy than your German will get you in Germany, or your French in France..

Phil.

Hmmm I don't know about that. Some of the grammar in Italian can be more challenging than that of Spanish. Still, if you put the effort out, you certainly can do well!
