Re: Top 10 Italian Movies
I disagree with your comment DDB regarding Chinese being the secondmost spoken language in Australia. Actually there is no such language as Chinese.
There are "Chinese" languages, mainly Mandarin and Cantonese, and if they are lumped together they do slightly outspeak Italian in Australia.
According to Wikipedia, the ranking of languages spoken in Australia is
English, Italian, Vietnamese, Greek, Cantonese, Arabic, Mandarin, Serbian.
Regarding Italian being easy to learn. I've just returned from a five week visit to Italy. I spoke to lots of people there who told me that well spoken Italian is difficult, so difficult that many native Italians use bad grammer.
Therefore they well accomodate foreigners like me who speak it badly.
I actually found German easier to learn than Italian at evening classes and complete all the textbooks and tests etc. However, when I put my language skills into practice overseas I find that my rudimentary Italian gets me much furthur than my German. The true Italians are more accepting of badly spoken Italian than other Europeans.
However...If you are visiting Italy as an economy class tourist, you will find that most of the people that you deal with are not native Italians. All of the lowly paid positions in the service industry are taken up by immigrants such as Poles, Bangladeshis, Africans etc. All of whom have English as their second language, and Italian as a rather poor third cousin. And somehow all the Italian that one has studied is useless.
I would not say that Italian is easy to learn, but I will say this:-
A smattering of Italian will get you a lot furthur in Italy than your German will get you in Germany, or your French in France..
