| Compagno Paolo interesting personality I met in Italy last summer. Die hard advocate by Villa 01-20-2008, 10:53 PM
An interesting character I met in Perugia, Umbria, Italia this past summer was Compagno Paolo. I was sitting in this very quaint outdoor cafe enjoying an Italian meal with my new found Italian female companion when this seemingly semi-delutional man gets up and starts to ramble on about the problems of the poor and working people of Italy. At first people were surprised and somewhat bothered by the ramblings of this guy. Then poco a poco they started to listen to him and by the end of the speech we were all applauding him loudly. Later on I approached this magnetic provacative personality of a man, introduced myself and had a long interesting conversation with Compagno Paolo champion of the poor and working people of Italy.
Paolo is a die-hard spokeman for the poor working people who went as a journalist to document terrorism in Nicaragua in the 1980's, where a bomb allegedly exploded near him. Paolo gives a daily "declamation" a sort of free verse political poem. During the summer you can see him declaim around 7:00 at La Terrazza and during the winter he hangs out a Kandinksy and Macadam and declaims at the Papaia Tuesdays. He's born and raised in Perugia. He's tall, very light skinned with blue eyes and looks more American than what most people think Italians look like. He's very friendly and speaks Spanish, English, French and of course his native language Italian. Come ho detto e molto gentile. When you go to Perugia, introduce yourself to him and tell him you read about him on this forum. Say, Buon Giorno Compagno Paolo. Come va? He'll give you a hug and then fill you in on all the history of the working class of Italy.
