If I say something to you in Italian and you don't understand say: Non capisco. I don't understand.
If you understand but don't know say: Non lo so. I don't know.
If you don't remember say. Non mi ricordo. I don't remember.
Sample conversation:
You: Buon giorno, Come stai? (Come sta?) How are you?
Me: Molto bene, grazie. E tu? (E Lei?) Very well, thank you. And you"
You: Molto bene (benissimo), grazie. (Benissimo is optional.) Very well, thank you.
Me: Tu parli l'italiano? (Lei parla l'italiano?) Do you speak Italian?
You: Si, (io) parlo l'italiano ma mi manca la practica. Yes, I speak Italian but I need practice.
Me: Tu parli bene l'italiano. Complimenti! You speak Italian well. My complements.
You: Grazie. Or: Grazie per li complementi! Or: Grazie mille per li complementi! Thank you. Thank you for the complement. Thank you so much for the complement.
Me: Prego. You're welcome.
Me: Ti piace parlare l'italiano? Do you like to speak Italian?
You: Si, mi piace parlare l'italiano molto(moltissimo). Yes, I like to speak Italian very much.
Me: Come ti chiami? (Come si chiama?) What is your name?
You: Mi chiamo Paula. E tu come ti chiami? (E Lei come si chiama?) My name is Paula. And what is your name?
Me: Mi chiamo Villa. Molto piacere Paula. My name is Villa. Nice to meet you Paula.
You: Al contrario il piacere e mio. or (Molto piacere.)or (Molto piacere di conoscerLa.) On the contrary the pleasure is mine.
E cosi via. And so on and so forth.
When I tell you Grazie. Thank you.
You say Prego. You're welcome. And visa versa.
Italian vowel sounds: a ah, e eh, i ee, o oh, u oo,
Italian like Spanish is spoken in the front of the mouth. English is spoken in the back of the mouth.
Pronunciation is not that important at first. It's something that comes with time practicing and listening to Italian.
