The Gerund - Il Gerundio - ing
The gerund is formed by dropping the infinitive ending(-are, -ere, or -ire -
and adding -ando for -are verbs and -endo for -ere and -ire verbs
The Gerund
-ando for first conjugation verbs, as in parlando.
endo temere to fear, to be afraid
Gerundio - Gerund temendo
-endo for second and third conjugation verbs, sentendo (sentire)to feel,hear
Seguendo queste indicazioni, arrivera a Parma in tempo per pranzare. By following these directions, you will reach Parma in time for lunch.
L'ho vista salendo sul treno. I saw her when I ws boarding the train.
Andando a casa, ho incontrato mio padre. Going home, I met my father.
Aprendo la porta, lui mi ha visto. While opening the door, he saw me.
Sbagliando s''imparare. One learns by making mistakes.
Elisabetta e tornata a casa piangendo. Elisabetta went back home crying. Provide the gerundio present for the following verbs.
sapere, capire, vedere, accompagnare, fare, credere, pensare, salpare, uscire, festeggiare, dare, venire smettere, seguire, aiutare, potee, vincere, piangere, volere, sentire
sapendo, capendo, vedendo accompagnando...
The gerund is normally preceded by the appropriate form of stare/estar. E.g., Sto parlando. Spanish is very similar. Estoy hablando.
Some verb have irregular gerund forms.
bere bevendo drinking
dire dicendo saying
fare facendo doing or making
porre ponendo putting
produrre producendo producing
trarre traendo pulling
