Default Luck di Mark Twain

Io sto leggendo il racconto di Mark Twain Luck.
Ad un certo punto, nella frase sottolineata, l'autore afferma che il suo amico, che gli sta raccontando la vita di un famose generale, comprņ con tutti i suoi risparmi un cornetcy(?). Cosa si intende per cornetcy una cuffia o un alfiere nel reggimento. Non riesco prprio a capire il senso della frase.

"So I took my poor little capital that I had saved up through years of work and grinding economy, and went with a sigh and bought a cornetcy in his regiment, and away we went to the field. "
