Hi Annet
The law should be the same for all non European Union citizens. The fact is being American you can go in and out of Italy at pleasure since a visa is not required. The problem is only when you try to work in Italy ( without a permesso di soggiorno you cannot get a real job ) - I know several Americans who have been in Italy a long time. Anyway if you are seriuos about it keep asking here and also go to some specialized agency.

You might consider applying for a position at one of the US military facilities in Europe.

Anything is possible if you just try. I don't recommend looking for a job on a base, though. They're usually reserved for Italians and military spouses. And since there aren't a lot of jobs on bases, they should be saved for us spouses. Haha.

Work in Italy: Jobs Abroad, Italian International Employment Opportunities Abroad
In Italy Online - Life in Italy - Want to find a job in Italy?

Hope that helps a little. Next time, do some research. It's all easy to find. Good luck

Are you eligible for EU citizenship??

If your parents or grandparents are Irish, you can get an Irish passport. I am not sure about other countries.

Australians can get a working holiday permit.

My understaning is that generally that an EU state must exhaust the employment possibilities within the EU, ie it has to be advertsied for a certain period of time. So for example perhaps the company can prove that you are the only person for the job, specialised qualifications etc - they would have to look after the paperwork etc. I am not sure how easy it would be but it might be worth a try.
