Default Europeans moving to Italy

Hi everyone,
My wife and myself are originally from Slovakia, but have been living in the USA for 11 years. We are now planning to make another move within about 2 years - to Italy. I already speak so-so Italian and so the language won't be a big problem. We have 3 little kids, however, and so the uprooting will not be easy. But we made the decision to go for it. I always dreamed of moving to Italy one day. Slovakia is one of the 8 new members that joined the EU in 2004, and since May 2006 Italy has no restrictions for the new EU member countries regarding what's called "free movement of workers". And so all we'll need to do is register and we're all set to make a new home. The quesion is, where to settle?
There are a few criteria I already have in mind, but these are only preferences. Since we want to be close to Slovakia to visit as often as possible (which we haven't been now becasuse we're so far away), we'd probably be looking in the North, preferably North-East. Right now we live in a suburb of Chicago, and so it would be hard for us to imagine living in a rural area. So we're looking at bigger cities, but not necessarily the huge ones such as Milan or Rome. If so, we'd prefer to be again away from the city itself, in a suburb or a smaller city. Next, a place near the sea would be a plus. Somenone recommended Ravenna, but I found a video on YouTube showing the nearby plants poluting the city, so I'm not sure about this city.
See the video at this address:

Any help or suggestions will be very much appreciated!
Thanks,
Rado

What about Ancona? It's on the east coast in the Marche. The Conero is right there with its beautiful sea. I think it might be a right compromise between Rome and a small village.

Ciao Rado!

In about one year i will be moving from Holland to Bergamo in Italy
my boyfriend lives there.
Bergamo has a pretty big center but all around Bergamo there are many
small places which are very nice. Also alot of mountains and some lakes near.
Also there is alot of work(industry)
Maybe that's an idea to look at?

Default wanting to open a buisness in Italy

Reading your messages were interesting and insightful. I am currently working in Brussels and my husband and I want to pick up an dmove to Italy to open up our dream jazz cafe. Of course we would like to be by the coast and perferable where there are theseasonal tourists. Do any of you have nay good tips as far as location goes and any information on how difficult it is to open up your own small buisness. Unfortuatly we are not rich so we will have to jump through some hoops but we are definately closer to making the move.

In response to the family from Slovakia/Chicago: don't rule out Rome just yet. I moved from Houston to Rome in 2001 and spent 2 years there. I too like a big city and the diversity that comes with it. I met people from all over the world who had relocated to Italy for different reasons. I'm sure there is more to think about with small children - I didn't have any at the time. We have a toddler now, but if we could uproot tomorrow and move anywhere in the world, Rome would still be at the top of the list.

Sky Europe flies direct from Rome to Bratislava at really good rates, so I wouldn't rule out the Rome area. Good luck to you!

I really like and recommend la molta bella northern Italian city of Verona in the region of Veneto.(VE-ne-to)(capital Venice) Verona is the very romatic city of Romeo and Juliet. I lived in Italy for 2 years in Vicenza which is only about 30 minutes from Verona. Use to go to Verona almost every other week-end. Besides Verona being known as the city of Romeo and Juliet it is also know as la piccola Roma(Little Rome)because it has an intact Roman type Colosseum and many other Roman ruins. Verona was an important city of the Roman Impire. At first glance you think you are looking at the Roman Colosseum. Verona is also a very pinteresco medieval city as in the times of Romeo and Juliet would suggest.

As if all this weren't enough Italy's largest lake, Lake Garda is just a few minutes away from Verona. What a gem of a place Lake Garda is! Molto bello! Grape vinyards all around a beautiful countryside. Portami la!! Take me there!!!

In addition Verona is only about an hour and a half from Venice and only half an hour to some of the best snow sking in Europe.
