Review: Head Over Heal by Chris Harrison
What does a red blooded Australian man do when his naked Italian girlfriend asks him to go to to Italy with her?
He goes of course.
Head over Heal is a reflection on Chris' first two years in Italy, from time in Milan to moving back to Puglia to their wedding detailing the beurocracy, festivals and the long hot summers inbetween.
There are many books about moving to a different country and Italy is probably one of the most popular destinations. The sheer quantity belies the difficulty of this type of writing, it is generally twee to over romantic and the protaginists never leave Tuscany.
This would have to be one of the loveliest books I have read (Plesant change from Midnight in Sicily, Gommorah, Cosa Nostra etc). Chris manages to achieve that delicate balance of being extremely fond of Italy and also questioning but never disrespectful and gives the reader something to think about.
Not only this but his observations are very funny.
Chris also deals with the thorny issue of International relations. Towards the end he writes very perceptively about being in a relationship that involves long flights and big decisions. As someone in that situation, it is wildly romantic but with that comes highs and lows and this is the first time I have seen it dealt with directly.
The book has also been translated into German and is called Siesta Italiana.
ENJOY!!!
