Yes, they're starting to remind me of the Klingons on that Star Trek series.

Imagine spending all that money on a national healthcare system in the US. What a concept that would be...oops, that would be cutting into big business. Can't have that, can we?

They complain, but they need us. If we close down the bases, their economy would go further down the toilet. If we left Naples the people there would be devasted, just like in vicenza. It would be like taking a major city away. The trickle down effect would be tremendous. Be careful what you picket for!

Perhaps the citizenry of any given country knows what's best for themselves? (That's certainly the mind-set we have here in the United States.)

Ciao Danno
I agree, some of these anti war social butterfly Italians are two face ignorant people who don’t have a clue when it comes to the importance of strategic military defense system. This plan to build a military base did not come out of an anti American crack jack box!
Its implemented for the future safety of there own region. I guess they want to take a social democratic approach to the matter … “ get slapped first” then react to the consequences after!

I cant stand anti American Italian! We should ship them all to Germany or give them a one week tour in Monte Casino to smarten up!

Yesterday I talked to an American who is stationed in Vicenza and he says they expaned the base.
I saw the inside of this base years ago when it had all this vacant land in the back (but still on the post or base.)
(There is a wall surrounding the whole base) Was thinking that the base was going to be expanding with additional
land but apparently we're just talking about the already existing land on the base.

My friend says they have rooms to rent for Americans right on the base. These rooms have kitchens.

Trying to find more up to date news on this. How about helping me out? Grazie.

The fact that this protest is fully supported by the anachist communists is rather telling, don't you think?

I'm visiting my friend, Villa, and I saw your comments on the forum. When a whole town, who has never been activists, comes together to protest an occupying war force, I wouldn't call them social butterflies. I think they have a right to say who is in their town and who is not. Isn't that what you believe in, democracy? You live in a US town. Let's say the Italian army decides to take over your town and build a huge Italian war base without the consent of YOUR town. Americans believe in democracy or DO THEY? Is democracy just for Americans, but not any others? Vicenza was a town for 2,000 years predating America; they have always survived and don't need us to be spending YOUR money to occupy them. I don't see any logic, sensibility to treating others as you would like to be treated, fairness, kindness, christianity concepts of caring about your neighbor, or just plain common sense. Common sense would tell you that the more we spend on war bases around the world, the less money there is for your needs as you become older.

I do not believe Italian are anti American - I do believe they are anti Bush's America as I am - I am quite disappointed that Bush attacked another country without UN resolution and allowed torture - This is not the America that won WWII - Also what if Japan had wan and 63 years later Japan still had bases in the USA ?? USA is doing to other country what would never accept if the same thing would be done to the US - and this over and over -

I still did not hear that somebody was attached in the street because he was American - The demonstrator are against the politics that have been carried out lately and not against the country which overall I think they do respect -

On the other hand I also do believe Italian do not mind as much the bases since lets face it - Italy has no real army for defense - this way the US pays for all that and the Italian Government can shrink the defense budget and ( hopefully ) focus the money on something else-

Anyway I hope that Max and Zidanie who are Italian living in Italy can give us more feedback on this -
