Many sites and many people are battling this law made by the Italian Constitution. There are people granted citizneship if they are 500th generation on the parental side---but, if yours began on the maternal--(not including your mother), and you were born before 1948 you are not granted citizenship even if you are 2nd degree Italian!

There must be hope somewhere out there for those royally jinked by this law

I believe it is possible to still obtain your citizenship through your grandparents. You can find exact details online at the Italian Consulate. Here is the link - good luck.

Yes, if your ancestor never acquired another citizenship. If he acquired American citizenship, please contact the Citizenship Office.

Those who were born before 1948 may obtain Italian citizenship only through paternal direct ascendants.

Did you try contacting the Italian ambassy in DC ? They did always answer my emails - It seem to be the ONLY Italian government agency that does it !

Paolo, unfortunately, the embassies go by strict superficial rules, and make it even more difficult. This law cannot be overlooked. But with three years of legal residence anyone is eligable for their citesinship if they are Italian descends from paternal or maternal sides.
