Hello
I like your approcah to this vacation you want to take in Abruzzo! I always try live 'locally' when I travel. I don't actually know the Abruzzo region that well but I think the first step to living like a local would be to rent an apartment. I can give you some idea of sites. This site usually has good options:
** Holiday Homes to Rent in Abruzzo **
I also like this site- they usually have quite a variety of accommodation options and they all look quite central:
Holiday Villas Abruzzo Italy Rentals Abruzzo Holiday Homes
And here is another option, that also lists a lot of houses and villas if you area looking for something bigger!
Holiday villas in Abruzzo, Italy - holiday rentals direct from owner
As for living more like a local, I would suggest just playing everything by ear and figuring out things as you go along. Talk to locals, hang out at the cafes and bars where you see a lot of other Italians, cook your own food, find out what there is to do.
