Default Herculaneum the Beverly Hills of the Pompeii Mt. Vesuvious eruption

We hear a lot about Pompeii but what about Herculaneum? I went to Pompeii and was not dissapointed. Many say Herculaneum is
even better than Pompeii. Next time I want to go Herculaneum.

Herculaneum (in modern Italian Ercolano) is an ancient Roman town, located in the territory of the current commune of Ercolano.
It is most famous for having been lost, along with Pompeii, Stabiae and Oplontis, in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius beginning on
August 24, 79 AD, which buried them in superheated pyroclastic material that has solidified into volcanic tuff. Since the discovery
of bones in 1981, some 150 skeletons have been found. Herculaneum was a smaller town with a wealthier population than
Pompeii at the time of its destruction.

Both Pompeii and Herculaneum were buried under 60 feet of pumice and ash. The lava traveled at 70 miles and hour making
it a bit difficult to out run. The temperature of the lava released by Mt. Vesuvius was a simmering 700 degrees.

Could it happen again?!

It took only 19 hours for Mt. Vesuvius to erupt and destroy Pompeii and Herculaneum. Could it happen again?!
If it does it will wipe out all if Naples with it. Just imagine Zidanie5 in his car trying to out run the 70 mile an hour lava flow!

The so-called Avellino eruption occurred about 3,780 years ago during the Bronze Age and was at least twice as
powerful as the one that smothered Pompeii and the nearby town of Herculaneum in 79 AD.

If a similar-sized eruption occurred today, it would destroy the entire Italian port-city of Naples and displace millions of people, experts say.

Yes you certainly must visit Herculaneum the next time you are in Italy. It is much smaller than Pompeii however & you can walk all around it in an hour whereas Pompeii is a much bigger place to wander, an entire city in fact. Herculaneum is mostly buried under the modern town so therefore the archeaologists are no longer allowed to dig. What you can see however is very interesting and much better preserved than Pompeii. It was thought that most of the population had escaped from Herculaneum until a ghastly discovery was made in the l980's when hundreds of skeletons were found in what is thought to be the boathouses along what would have been the shore at that time. Apparently unlike the Pompeians who were suffocated by the ash the Herculaneums were actually killed instantly with a pyroclastic floe and when their very brains exploded. It is all very tragic. Lets hope that Vesuvius doesnt erupt again but the powers that know about these things say that it most certainly will but they dont know when. Everything will be destroyed again including Naples itself. Horrible thought!

Yes, Ercolano is much more interesting than Pompeii. If and when Vesuvio erupts it will certainly be a disaster. They have built up so much around the base of the mountain that 100's of thousands of people will be killed. If they don't have days notice they will be trapped in their cars in traffic jams.It would be a nightmare. I know the U.S. Navy and the local Italian Fire Departments hold annual drills but you can hold drills every day but when it actually happens , boop! It's all over.

LOL, don't bring unluck!
AND, my car is an old Citroen AX, hence I'm not really sure it can stay at that speed for long

By the way, I don't think it could happen again, all studies show that Vesuvius is pretty quiet and sleepy at the moment
And Herculaneum inhabitants tried to seek refuge on the beach, and it was a tragic mistake as the downhill right behind them converged all on them.
