Default Protests

I wanted to ask a general question about the protests I've seen in Roman piazzas that seem to be against the war in Iraq. When I was there this summer a number of anti-war protests were held, and they seemed to be similar to those we have here in the U.S., but also different.

They were more heated -- more things were said, more arguments broke out. But they seemed also less likely to break into physical violence. The police in the area were on alert but didn't seem to be too worried about it.

I only saw a few, though, and not enough to make a real comparison. So my questious would be...

Is there a common concensus among the Italian populace either for or against the whole Iraq situation as it stands and has been going for the last three years?

Are protests of any kind generally calm and ordered or do they get out of hand?

What other kinds of things do Italians tend to get out and protest about?

Teresa

Default Italian Protesting

Around 2 years ago I happened to witness one that caught my eye. There was music blasting a song that played the words of free drugs and using all kinds of them. IF I could only remember that song, I'd write the title for you.
There were Italian adults up a level or two looking down on these youngsters with shirts on starring large plant-like structures. The adults overhead sat shaking there heads/ or with their mouths wide-open in surprise. They wanted Cannabis to be legalized. It was one of the best ones I've seen so far.

Jacqueline,

Thanks! If you remember that song title let me know.

Then there are the organized protests that result in bus and taxi strikes.

This summer, in the middle of the really hot part of mid-July, I had to move from one area of the city, near Termini, to a hotel near St. Peter's (called Hotel Adriatic, I highly recommend) and I had a bunch of stuff to carry. No taxis - they were all on strike. I ended up dragging suitcases and bags and boxes half a mile to the Metro station, taking that across town, then walking another half mile to the hotel. Twice. In the afternoon. By the time I was done with the second trip I would have paid a taxi driver more than an entire day's pay for just a half mile ride.
