I like what you are saying mike, I don't like it when people call great scientists names other than theirs just because that's the way they are translated in their language (the people's not the scientists') but I think it's funny when trying to add a certain flavour from a language that would make the name sound as if it's from that origins, with italian I think it's always by adding a vowel to the end of the word. so it's just for fun, my name "Nouran" means 2 lights in Arabic and I love it so I'm not thinking about changing it any time soon

In Italy this has always been quite a frequent thing (changing people's names).
Jules Verne = Giulio Verne
Linné = Linneo
Descartes = Cartesio
and so on...

Moreover, this phenomenon lived a new great diffusion era with the fascism, which made every name in English unwanted, and many a horrible name translations got born at the time.

and the short form of Michele is Miky (pronounce it: Meeky) or Lele
