I go every year,to Italy and never eat meat. There are so many options, in most Restaurants, that I have never found a need to ask for a Veggie menu.

Hi jessabella
From my experience, most Italians love all their food, meat included! That said, because generally they eat a good, balanced diet, there are many vegetable dishes that are meat free. Do you and and your husband eat fish? (Odd question I know, but in England some people would class themselves as vegetarian even though they will happily eat fish!). Although there are no vegetarian restaurants that I have seen, the variety of dishes are such that you really shouldn't have a problem.

Ciao,
my name is Enzo Aiello,
i do not understand if you are vege or vega-tarian,anyway you do not have to worry about meat, i live in Rome, there are many open outside markets where you can buy vegetables and fruits , you can even find nice vegetarian restaurants.
So i think you can survive........

My wife is vegetarian, I am the very definition of an omnivore and we've never had a problem in Italy. In fact, my wife found Italy had enough vegetarian options on the menu that you don't have to announce "I am a vegetarian" like you are a criminal. It was more difficult in parts of France, Spain and especially Portugal, where our hosts never heard of such a thing and meat seems to be in everything.
There are plenty of antipasti and pasta dishes that have no meat.
If you are a vegetarian that eats fish, you have even more options in Italy. And of course there is always pizza, with or without cheese for lacto-vegans. As far as people who don't eat eggs - stick to the dishes made with dried pasta.
And make sure you can read an italian menu - some things may seem veggie, but are cooked in beef broth or flavored with marrow - like risotto ala milanese.

ciao,
thanks for all the comments...
To answer a few questions...yes we eat fish, dairy, and eggs so I suppose we are not true vegitarians...but other meat we dont usually eat. We arent very fussy either..it is very good to hear that we will be okay. I know that there are many varieties in Italian food as we have so many Italian resturants here in Australia which offer many dishes...but I remember eating in Mexico about 4 years ago and they looked at me like I was possed by the devil...akkkkk..it was so weired...anyway thanks for the comments! Being an ex-chef myself i have made heaps of Italian dishes myself that were converted to fit my dietary needs!

I found Italy to be very vegetarian friendly, actually more so than the United States. You don't need to eat red meat or any other type of meat to survive in Italy. Eat healthy, live long!

Dont fret my dear,
you dont need to do anything you dont wish to do. There are many many vegetarians in Italy, even italians, and the ones I know are posh. In Rome we have several resturants and even the BEE HIVE hotel that serve nothing by organic vegetarian dishes!
