| | One of the great dangers of extremist opinions such as these is that it reinforces the relativist attitudes that are already prevalent in many Western cultures. The enthusiastic embracement of a separatist mantra as though it will be the panacea to all of Italy’s unresolved problems cannot (and should not) be taken too seriously. It is an illusion of false hope. It is Panglossian in is optimism for a better future for Italy. A study of all previous independent civilisations and empires will show how short lived they were. Even Venice, once a powerful independent maritime republic and empire, weakened and eventually disintegrated, becoming the victim of her own undoing. Look again at the expansion of Rome and the colonisation of the peninsula. What happened to that? I think T.S. Eliot said it best - “In the life of one man, never the same time returns, sever the cord, shed the scale, only a fool, fixed in his folly, thinks that he can turn the wheel whereon he turns.” The same can be said of Italy and her politics. The roots to inefficiency and lack of governability are complex, multifarious and multifactorial. It would be invidious to suggest otherwise. However, setting aside the inherent weakness in Italy’s public sector, the problem lies in part because there is a distinct lack of unity. This is embedded in the Italian psyche. Italians are highly individualistic. You only need to look within one region, Tuscany, for example, to realise that. The originator of this thread does not want a fascist dictatorship. Nor does he want a Nazi or Communist regime. He says that Italy needs a democracy. But a democracy must be carefully legislated if we are to avoid an uneven distribution of political power. Separatism and xenophobia means the separation of power. This will only destroy democracy not create it.

I cannot speak with much authority on this topic since I am (unfortunately for me) not Italian and don't live in Italy. However, I can appreciate the frustrations that Rambo gives voice to. In theory the government in Italy has been fighting the "mafia" in it's many forms for over 60 years. One would like to believe that the power of the state would have overcome that of the criminals in 60 years. Many good men and women in the justice system have given their lives in this battle.
However, instead of progress, there is the appearance that the influence of the "mafia" is being seen in the North as well as in the South which would indicate that the problem may not be limited to persons of the South. Greed is not, I think, limited by the gene pool.
If the chief of an illegal organization can "hide" in plain sight for 43 years before being arrested then there is something wrong with society. Government is not well trusted in Italy from what I read - so do people turn a blind eye at times because they don't want to get involved or because they fear the consequences of supporting the judicial system?
As much as I am uncomfortable with Rambo's extreme position (and with the Lega) I must admit that, with the exception of one trip to Napoli, we travel and stay in the North. If most foreign visitors take that approach then it is easy to understand why the North prospers and the South suffers economically. Oddly enough, I understand that Puglia is used by many Northern Italians as a reasonably priced place to vacation with excellent beachs, good wines and a lack of foreign tourists. Perhaps the South is not all bad Rambo?

| | Are the most beautiful women of Italy from southern Italy?!
Cucinotta Maria Grazia
Born in Messina, Sicily and nationally known as the most beautiful woman in Italy. She starred in the Oscar winning film, Il Postino.
(... ok, ok, so she was born in Sicily, but Messina is so close that we consider her to be Calabrian!)

Additionally it is said that Buenos Aires, Argentina has some of the most beautiful women in the world with amazing natural bodies.
Well 3/4 of the people from Buenos Aires are of Southern Italian origin. "This is the city of the "mujeres hermosas."
What's your opinion of all this Rambo boy?!

It is one thing to offer an informed opinion, which is what this forum aims to do in its quest to attract members who are interested in Italy and all things Italian. It is another when you are being completely bigoted and so obviously racist.
Should there be any repetition of such comments in future by Rambo, take note, they will be deleted.
