Default Italian Object ID

I'm trying to identify something that was found in Toro, which is just outside of Campobasso. The object is about 90cm long:

I've done some searching on the web but didn't have any luck, so I thought that I would ask here. Please let me know if you recognize it.

It looks like the wand used to light candles in a church. (You know, the one too tall or too high to reach)

Perhaps Twila is right, but if it's so it must be very ancient.
I don't often go to churches but I'm sure there are newer objects to do that task.

Thanks for the replies, I got some additional information from the person who sent me the photos. He said that the long tube is hollow and open into the container, which contains a white powder residue.

Based on this info, I'm almost certain this is for making fireballs by blowing powder up to the lit candle. This could be for a science demo or maybe a stage production.

I have a web site called "What is it?", in which I post photos of unusual things and try to find out what they are. I posted this device on the site this week, if anyone is interested.
