Smile curious about Italian street names

My hubby & I will be going to Florence for a month in 2008 and we both love maps so we've got several of Florence, Siena, Ravenna, the whole country of Italy, etc. and I noticed that sometimes the streets are named after dates....

I would like to hear from anyone that knows the significance of some of these dates. Some of them are:

Via Venti Settembre
Via Ventiquattro Maggio
Via Ventisette Aprile

These are all in Florence.

Molto Grazie,

dmac

Default Significance of Street Names

Hi dmac,
You will see similar street names throughout Italy, some have to do with the founding of the modern Italian state:

Venti Settembre - September 20th 1870 is the date when Rome was annexed to the Italian nation.

Ventiquattro Maggio- May 24, 1915 Italy declares war on Austria and enteres WWI. Important to the Risorgimento movement.

Via Ventisette Aprile -April 27, I believe this is the date that Florence became capital of Italy in 1865 (for only 6 years).

However it was also on this date in 1945 that Italian partisans captured Mussolini.

hope I got them right!
Justin

The 20th September - commemorates the "Risorgimento" when Italy unified from all the different states into a single nation.

24th May - Italian Constitution (?) but I'm really not sure about this one

25th April - Italy was liberated from Nazi occupation (1946)
