| | Some tips on Italian Dual Citizenship
I just wanted to pass on some advice to those who have appointments in the future with the Italian consualte for dual citizenship. I had my appointment and all went well, but I could have been a little more prepared.
Be prepared, If you question a document you may or not need, it's a good idea to get it just in case, have it apostilled and translated as a back up.
Have all your original documents in order by descent, for example: Grandfather, Mother and your paperwork, also bring 2 copies of everything in order including the document, the apostille and the translation, this will save them the time to make the copies and possibly misplace the originals.
Have your consulate forms filled out so you just need to sign them in front of them.
Bring your ID or drivers license and also a copy of it and your American passport and a copy of that also. The more organized you are the smoothier your apointment will go and you will make them happy, they are extremely busy these days and if you can help them out they will appreciate it and make your life easier when it comes to expiditing your citizenship.

A little consideration goes a long way.

Sorry to dissapoint you, but when I move to Italy with my family they won't be getting more Republicans or Capitalists with us.
But I would be interested in the place in Calabria as a vacation home. Ciao

Do you have dual citizenship and how was your process faster by having an Italian wife?

No I don't have dual citizenship yet - I will apply though. My dealings with the authorities have been for residency, health and transfer the car onto Italian plates. Hopefully the citizenship will be easier.

How is dual citizenship obtained?
In some cases, you may not be aware that you're a citizen of another country.
A second citizenship may result from:
an application for citizenship
place of birth
family connections, including place of birth of one of your parents or even grandparents
marriage
extended residency
Advantages of Dual Citizenship
Many remain or become citizens of another country because of the advantages, including:
employment opportunities
entitlement to social programs, such as pensions
property ownership
unrestricted residency
There are also risks and problems associated with having more than one citizenship.
1. Recognition of Citizenship
There could also be problems in other countries, especially if you used the travel document of the country of your second citizenship to gain entry. In such circumstances, the local authorities could decide that your homeland country does not have the right to provide consular assistance.
2. Military service: Many countries still have compulsory military service. If you are a citizen, and you meet other conditions, you may be legally required to register for military service and to respond to call-up orders. This legal obligation may exist even if you do not reside in the country of your second citizenship. Your obligations could be enforced even if you're just visiting at some point in the future.
There are many government websites in your country that can provide information on dual citizenship. In some cases certain countries will ask for you to give up your orignal citizenship to obatain a second citizenship and of course there are many countries that do not offer dual citizenship or permit certain foriegners from other countries in entering Italy.
