Default Help with an Italian marriage certificates and addresses.

My parents were married in Genoa. I wish to obtain their marriage certificate.

The US embassy in Italy says:

A small fee is charged for the issuance of a certificate, varying from place to place. Although it is customary for Italian city offices to waive the small administrative fees for foreign applicants, their budget does not allow for expenditures of funds to cover their services and postal charges. International reply coupons can be used by the Italian municipalities to pay for postage when mailing vital records to the United States.

They advise I send this form.

Questions:

Is this the correct address?
All’Ufficio Dello Stato Civile
Comune di GENOVA
Provincia di Genova (GE)
IT-16124
Italy

What is the difference between these two documents?

Certificato di matrimonio di

Estratto del certificato di matrimonio di

The address for the Comune di Genova (city) is:

Comune di Genova
Ufficio Anagrafe
Via Garibaldi, 9
Palazzo Tursi
16124 GENOVA
Italy

Telefono:
010 557111
Fax:
010 2469941 - 010 5572580
E-mail:
info@comune.genova.it
Sito WEB:
Comune di Genova

However, it will depend on what 'frazione' (part) of Genova they came from - there are all of these: Genova Comunes. Click for details.

The two certificates you mention

The Certificato di matrimonio is just that - the certificate with the date and the names of the couple.

The Estratto del certificato di matrimonio - is far more detailed and gives details relative to the couple and details of their residency etc.

There is also the 'Atto Integrale di Matrimonio' - the integral marriage certificate which would be a photocoy of the entry in the marriage register.

A large Comune like Genova will probably accept an International reply coupons but many small ones will not. I have found over time that it is best to enclose Italian postage stamps for them to use. Sending a few dollars/or a couple of £'s is useless, the charge to exchange small sums is ususally more than the bank note is worth. A genealogy site that I know offers a Postage Stamp Service for their members and they only charge for the stamps (via PayPal). If you would like details - send me a Private Message here.

Thank you for your reply. My parents were foreign students at the University of Genoa.

Is there an Italian equivalent to stamps.com that sells e-stamps?

I've never heard of stamps.com, but I've never heard of a site where you can buy stamps over here as they have a licence to sell stamps. If you want the name of the site just send me a PM..
