My son and I planted several packages of seeds this spring. We've been so excited about what we thought were pumpkins taking over our backyard, but now we're starting to think they may not be pumpkins afterall. The first piece of produce looks an awful lot like a watermelon - green, striated. I checked the Internet and pumpkin and watermelon leaves look similar. Does anyone know if pumpkins start out green and then turn orange?

Martha, I know this is old but yes, pumpkins do start out green and turn orange or white or whatever color you plant.
My growing season is almost over, sadly, I got plenty of tomatoes and made lots of sauce and sundried tomatoes. I'm waiting for my eggoplantoes, but I may not get any of those. I also tried the upside down tomatoes and won't waste my time on them next year.
I hope everyone got plenty of good veggies.

Saluti Danno,

Thanks for checking in with me. It seems it was pumpkins or pumpkin afterall. Even though the vines tooke over the backyard, we only harvested one medium-sized pumpkin! I got some cute photos of Nate with it holding it above his head. After record temps this summer, we may try to plant some herbs in a month or so. Amazingly, our tomato plant survived the weed wacker but still did not produce any fruit, and the beans Nate sprouted at the end of school have climbed the fence, but alas, no beans to pick. We did manage to have several zucchini con pasta dinners though. It was so fun to pick the veggies and take them right in to cook. Nate insisted on making a smiley face on his plate with the zucchini before devouring them.
