would inslata caprese (tomato with mozzarella and basil) be a contorno or an antipasto? I'm pretty sure it's a contorno but I wanted to double check

I eat it as a contorno
but wikipedia says it's an antipasto

Signora Markymark says it's an antipasto, as contorno is an accompaniment to a meat (or main) course, and you wouldn't have meat or fish with cheese (separately anyway).

All the menus I have seen in Italy list it under Antipasti. There is a little hand manual called "menu master" they have them for lots of countries. It breaks down each course and tells you how to pronounce the dish as well as what it is made of. It's a very good book to take with you to Italy and it has Insalata Caprese as Antipasto.

I suppose I always thought it was anti pasto...

Exactly Paolo, I've never seen it coming along with another dish. I've usually ate it as an antipasto.

Well, I'm looking at a few menus, from restaurants in Rome, Florence, and Bologna, as I respond to this site and I beleive it's an antipasto rather than a side dish. However, a mixed salad is a side dish, but in any case, both can be the main meal.


Sto guardando ad alcune menu da Roma, Firenze, e Bologna mentre vi scrivo e credo che sia piu` antipasto che contorno. comunque, l'insalta mista e' un contorno, ma in ogni caso, tutte e due possono essere un pasto.
