Buying my house in Italy

Buying my house in ItalyFinally, now , pushing 50, I finally got my house in Italy. My town of choice was Bolsena.
I always liked that part of the country and the Lake. The lake appears almost out of nowhere on the left going north from Viterbo-Montefiascone. All of a sudden the ladscape chages and commercial buildings disapper to give space to the view of the Lake. Bolsena lake, besided being one of the cleanest in Europe
is just beautiful. Ok It does not have the blue colors of the lakes in Britsh Columbia, and most probale you will not meet George Clooney here since his house is on the lake region in the North, l but has plenty of charme and history. Bolsena is located at the northern point of Lazio, just 4 miles fro Umbria an maybe 12 from Tuscany.
That presented to the House buyer the good advantage of getting Tuscany landscapes at Lazio's prices. Not that anything is cheap in Italy now that the Euro seems unstoppable but it is to my opinion one of the better location choice.
I was familiar with the area since I was used to pass by by motorcycle and when I finally saw my future house it was love at first sight. I was looking for something near a town center where I could go out of the house and have a cappuccino , something with a garden, not too isolated and with some 'character'. Well I did not think I would find it but there it was with a for sale sign on the garage door. The rest is history.
I am pretty pleased with my purchase, There are a so many historical things to see in a 1/2 an hour radius, Etruscan Ruins, the papal town of Viterbo, Civita di Bagnoregio, Bomarzo ,as well as a lot of entertainment provided by the lake. Thermal baths, sailing, kayak, boat rentals, fishing, sailing, scuba diving, biking and horse riding are some of the activity offered. The old town is quite small but a pleasure to walk with a Castle on top for night life summer entertainment.
I had a piece of land that I sold and I used that money as a downpayment and for the rest I got a Mortgage from an Italian bank - it will be 10 years of payments but it all seem worth it. I was expeting some sort of problems from the Italian bank but on the countrary they where very nice and cooperative, the loan was a stright forward process ( however I have the Italian citizenship ), it is a different story for non Italian from what I understand.

Congratulations on the new place! We are also looking to buy something over there and I hope it goes as well for us. I don't have my citizenship yet but my mother was born and raised there so that should work.
You are so right about the prices over there...wish we would have been able to buy something years ago!Posted 08-31-2007 at 10:44 PM by Italy...Love It!
