Hi at all travellers out there! Since I have been studying English in school for a couple of months now and heard so much about the great experience of taking a language course abroad, I’m now planning on taking one myself soon! I already started to read up on different possibilities but there are so many options! Until know I really don’t know where I would like to do this. Can anyone recommend me a place?

After my research I am now especially interested in three options. The first one is an English course Malta. Has anyone ever done that? What I have heard till now sounds great! I like the fascinating eclectic culture there. Due to the long relationship between the Islanders and the various nationalities that occupied Malta over the centuries there seems to exist an interesting variation of styles and traditions.

Next I heard a lot about courses in Ireland – cursos de ingles en Irlanda as they call it here. For me Ireland seems particularly exciting! It is so different in its culture, climate, vegetation and fauna than every place I have ever been to that I am pretty sure I would have a lot explore there! Has anyone ever been to Ireland or even took an English class there? I would love to see cities like Dublin or Belfast and visit monuments like the Blarney Castle.

I’m further considering a curso ingles Madrid. Though I know that the mother-tongue isn’t English and it is a city in my home country, I feel like this could be a good option to get started and see whether or not I like language classes. If this goes well I could do another class in an English-speaking country next year! I know a couple of students from my school who did it and they were all more than pleased with this experience. Madrid seems to be an astonishing city with a lot to explore! Since I’m especially interested in art, I know that Madrid is a living art market. I can already picture myself visiting the Golden Triangle of Arts composed of three of the most important worldwide art galleries: Museo del Prado;, Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, and Centro de Arte Reina Sofia.

I really cannot seem to decide! But I am more than sure that I’m going to do this language class to further improve my English since I feel language learning is crucial in this globalised world we live in.

Hello to all out there! I am writing to share our recent experience of being a host family for a German girl here in Canada. Due to a tight working schedule starting right after university I never had the time or chance to go abroad and experience different cultures through a stay abroad. But I always wanted to get in touch with other cultures and learn about them. So I decided to bring the cultural experience to me and my family.

Until last week a German girl who took an English course Canada stayed with us. It was a great adventure and a big success for both sides. Her English was already pretty good as she already took a two-week “Sprachkurs Hawai” last year and we had no problems at all to communicate with her. While she of course was able to further deepen her language skills and to experience the Canadian culture in a Canadian family we also learned a lot about her culture and Europe as a whole. She cooked typical German meals for us and even taught us a little German! In fact her and my daughter (who are almost the same age) became really good friends so my daughter decided to continue the cultural exchange and visit her in Germany next year! There they will explore Germany and after that they are planning on doing a tour through Great Britain together. Can anyone give me advice on how to travel best through the Great Britain? Does anyone have any experience with the British rail passes? I think this is a great chance for my daughter and I was able to see from our guest how much one can gain through such a stay abroad.

All in all this was a great opportunity for us to widen our horizons and I would recommend this to anyone who is open-minded and wants to get in touch with other cultures.

teaching English overseas and meet someone

I am thinking about teaching English overseas and was wondering about the best way to go about it – where to do it, whether to take private classes or apply to a school, whether to go alone or take a friend, how long I’d need to be away to feel like I’ve had an experience…Basically everything to do with what would be a horizon widening trip! I am fluent in French, German and Spanish (and have English as my native tongue) and so really do have a lot of choice. It would be my first time travelling away from home and so I’d like to stay in Europe for now; if it all goes wrong, I’m not too far away to come back! I have worked in one of the many escuelas de ingles en Inglaterra based in London teaching English to Spanish people. The experience went very well – I like their culture and found them all eager to learn – and so I am thinking I may start my travels in Spain, to find a city I’d like to settle in to work. I will be investing in one of the eurorail passes so I have some flexibility when looking for my future (albeit temporary) home. I’ll start in Madrid and listen to recommendations – I understand Salamanca and Valladolid are close and so they are likely to be on the visiting list. I’d also like to see Andalucia as I’ve heard the culture is very different there to what it is in the North. If anyone has done this before (or knows of any big Spanish university cities), please, let me know your recommendations!
