Thousands of Italians moving back to Italy
Well .. Italians are moving back to Italy from abroad. Why?
To rediscover there one time homeland.
Did you know that the majority of Italians from Italy living abroad in other countries of the world come from the southern regions of Italy.
Why did they leave in the first place? …War & Economics!
What do you tell these American/Canadian/Australian/British…Italians , about moving back too Italy?
I cant believe ..all the Joes, Johns, Sam’s and Franks, who had there name changed in school from Guiseppe, Giovanni, Salvatore and Franco are coming back to Italy. Not to mention or imagine all the Maria’s or Anna’s (Mary. Anne).
Have they just come to a point in there life where they need a change or are they totally fed up with the hustle and bustle of the major cities located in these countries of the USA, Canada, Australia, South America..Uk ..etc…?
After all these years, where do they get the courage to leave? Is it a gene passed on from there original parents who left everything behind searching for a better lifestyle.
Was it a long distance wake-up call form Italy? Have they finally realized that you don’t live for ever …not even in the most materialistic part of the world. What was it?
Have all the bathroom mirrors cracked and are they now peaking thru these cracks and finding themselves. What was it?
I remember deciding to leave America after one of my normal early morning drives, rushing for work ..while hyper ventilating and convincing myself in the car that I was not suffering from a heart attack.
For all of you in Italy, think about it.. while you finish your 10am cappuccino’s !
What do we say to these Italians living abroad who want to come home?
ALORA!

I'm a first generation Italo-American myself and I've lived half of my life in Italy.
One of the main reasons I can come up with that they want to move back IMHO is that the dolcevita still exist there. Things ARE way more laid back there, life is way more enjoyable there, the people are way much nicer than here, the lifestyle is much healthier, and it's completely not based on day by day, rushing around everyday like here.
Currently the economy here in the US is horrible, and we're not even sure if we're going to get anything back from social security.
The Euro dollar is way stronger right now.
Overall I think Europe is becoming the new America.
Sure southern Italy isnt perfect, and a lot of people are moving up north for a better job.
But look at it this way, Italy is the size of Florida, and here in the US lots of people relocate from one coast to another just for a job.
If there is a better possibility of living, I dont see why they should stay here in the US.
I do agree that there is a chance that you get paid in the US a lot more for doing the same job in Italy, but the cost of living in Italy is way lower than the US.
The bottom line is that there could be many reasons why people decide to move back.
I would in a heartbeat if I would find the right opportunity, not to mention anywhere else in Europe.
I simply don't see why you seem to be so against it. What is so great about the US?
This country is just as messed up and corrupt just like any other. Each one has its own pros and cons.
Think about it while you finish your jelly filled donut that is going along with your supersized mocha swirled latte!!!!Posted 01-06-2008 at 06:15 AM by Reverb

Ciao Reverb
Excellent comments! I agree totally with you, as I am not against anyone moving back to Italy.
The blog was posted to make Italians aware of the fact that Italian Americans, Canadians, etc..
Are moving back to Italy. Although on this forum you will come across comments from members living in Italy complaining about the negative aspects, economic struggles and you are absolutely correct that these members have forgotten how expensive it is to live in such countries like US, Canada, England , etc…
Yes, they do live the dolce vita in Italy! Why they say otherwise is beyond me.
Thanks

As someone who has made the move from England to Italy it is very easy to say why life in Italy is more expensive: salaries in Italy (which are among the lowest in Europe) are roughly half or a third of what they are in the UK for the same job, yet I am paying the more or less the same price for food, electricity, gas, petrol and clothes.
I wouldn't say I have a dolce vita, but I just have different priorities in life now.Posted 01-10-2008 at 12:07 AM by sardoman

Ciao Sardoman
First of all, I respect your courageous decision to move your family, from England into Italy. I applaud you and others that have done the same.
Foreign transitions are very challenging and frustrating. But you did it Sardoman !
As a business man who has gone thru many costly financial trials and tribulations in the construction and real estate business, I feel your pain and understand that we all have chosen paths of priority.
Hopefully, they will lead us to prosperous and life satisfying ventures. One should be so proud of accomplishing the first move. So many others, from reading these comments and blogs in this fantastic forum, are on the edge of making the same decision.
What do we say to these people who want to move here?
Do we discourage or encourage them? Do we make them understand that life in Italy has the same challenges, economical struggles like any other country facing increasing living costs and regional unemployment.
My local Italian friends in Cosenza, have mentioned to me, many times.. how little they earn. Responding to there polite shyness and curiosity when they ask me how much does a plumber, carpenter, bricklayer etc…earn in America? From the expressions on there faces and in comparison, I realize unfortunately, Italians are less paid than someone working the same job in America. But, I tell them that there are still so lucky to be living in Italy. This response coming from an Italian Canadian (American) shocks them!
What about Life in Italy?
Why is it that so many of us who have had the opportunity to vacation in Italy desire so desperately to return? Is it this wonderful social aspect of our Italian culture? Is it the food , people, climate, fashion, What drives us so lovingly insane that creates this fascination…. too want and stay forever!
Sardoman..people with your experience are need in these forums to help and inspire others in fulfilling there desires or dreams of living life in Italy.
What blows my mind is “Why move too Italy ? “

Ciao Frank,
Italy IS a fantastic country for all the reasons you mention, and they are partly why my family came to live here. In fact the change wasn't too much of a shock as my wife is Italian and we have friends and family where we now live.
Unfortunately this forum wasn't around when I was making up my mind to move here, but I wish it had been: I would have been better prepared. Although some of the members (myself included) write some negative things about the financial situation in Italy, we also write a lot of positive things about other aspects of life here. I am happy with the choice I have made and I would recommend other people to move here.
I think the forum gives a good overall and honest picture of what it is like to move to and live in Italy, and by doing so I hope it helps other people to make the right decision when contemplating whether to move here or not. It is a life changing decision and people should go into it knowing all the facts, and not being swept away by the romantic ideas acquired during a holiday here.Posted 01-11-2008 at 04:15 PM by sardoman

I read all your comments about moving back to Italy from abroad. Even though I am not Italian, I feel like an honorary one. I really love your country and I first trip back on 2006, I discovered that one can live life without hesitation and deadline. So if anyone is in the process of taking that step, go for it. I have live all my life in New York, and coming from the island of Puerto Rico where life was so humble and simple when I was growing up, the closet that I came to on all my traveling to Europe was Italy. Many of my people tend to go back to the island once they retired, but myself I wont be doing that. I already have in mind my future. Italy!!! Yes I decided that in 6 years if I am still alive and well, when I retire, I will crash in your country to live La vida dulce (Dolce vita). God Bless Your Country...idPosted 02-21-2008 at 10:14 PM by Imlady
