Well here I go I am leaving in 2 days so I have to do this.. After deciding a time that would work for us to go back to Italy this fall we decided 2 weeks was the max. Oct 9th through the 24th. The excitement started setting in as I started thinking about seeing family, eating good food, drinking good wine (without sulfates), and discovering new places to explore.
So I started the fun task (arg) of looking for and pricing flights. While I am not going to mention airlines by names or the websites as there are hundreds, I started my task. I went to the usual ticket websites and what I found out is that there are only a few airlines that fly direct to Rome from Boston Mass. As we are staying in Campania just north of Napoli I did not want a 5-6 hr drive from Milan. And the extra flight to Napoli wasn't worth it.
Not good. They were real pricey about $1.000.00 each. Too much. I am not one of the rich and famous just get me there any seat except near the bathroom. Worst trip ever. I then started looking for connections in different citys better prices but longer flight times about $800.00 each. and some of the layovers were way to long some up to 6 hrs. no good. I did this for about 1 week always checking in the am and pm each day. A trick I learned is to also use a different computer if you can, clear history of websites visited and clear cookies.Change the day back or ahead one day also.It always seems to work for me. You can see how the prices can go up just after you look and then go back about 10 mins later. Well after 2weeks I lucked out.I tried a website that I never had luck with before and booked our flight. $640.00 each including all taxes and fees. One stop each way and just 3 hrs more than a direct flight. I had to call and make sure there was no mistake. There wasn't. Cool. I found that if you really take your time and dig deep you will find it. I also monitored every day after and checked flights and they kept going up. Etickets online is also a savings. I then had to rent a car. I used the same approach but also found coupons online that saved me even more. I rented a Fiat Punto grande for 2 weeks at $464.00 inclusive. My best price yet. I also have learned to scale back with clothing and don't check any baggage. Well I hope this wasn't to boring for my first post. I promise I will have good tales to tell every other day.. Ciao! Ed
