Would you like to travel in Italy without enduring dreadful crowds and hot, humid weather? Then winter and spring are the right seasons to travel there!

I like it best in winter. It can be very cold but that’s better than enervating heat! Walking around on a frosty, but sunny day is a pleasure as long as you are warmly dressed. The weather can be quite warm now because of global warming. When I was in Venice in February we didn’t even need a coat on most days. The sun shone every day. Unfortunately this brought more people to Venice!

There is always the risk of more rain and even snow. Sometimes travel is difficult and planes can be cancelled if there is a sudden, very frosty spell, but luckily I haven’t experienced that! It poured with rain in Florence on a few days when I travelled there a few years ago, however, and it was gloomy in Rome as well.

The lack of crowds is a huge advantage. On some days there are no queues at the museums at all if you arrive early enough. It’s much easier to walk around the cities and there is less danger of being attacked by pickpockets. There are also fewer crowds in the shops which is great for shopaholics!

There are sales in January as well and the winter fashions in Italy are gorgeous. I especially love them because I come from the tropics. I like to look at the stylish, woollen coats, the luxurious pashminas and the cashmere scarves. I also like to study what the Italians wear, but, unfortunately they did not look as fashionable last year, perhaps because the weather suddenly became much warmer.

Another big advantage is that the hotels are cheaper, especially in Venice. From January until March hotels there have specials and it is possible to stay in four-star hotels for low prices and enjoy the luxury. If the room doesn’t suit another suggestion is to give the porters a large tip and request them to change it. This worked for me!

One problem, however, is that these prices attract large tour groups which can be quite annoying. It’s best to go to breakfast very early or after they’ve gone for the day.

Going to the beaches or the lakes is not a good idea in winter. These resorts would be rather bleak and many of the hotels are closed in the winter.

I am looking forward to going back to Italy during another sunny winter season.
