I have a growing fascination for all things Italian, starting from the language, the culture, fashion, food, art, and natural beauty. Making a few visits to select destinations is on the top of my travel to-do list.
In this blog I will try to write in my halting, error-ridden Italian about things that affect me on a daily basis, and maybe a little about my struggles on learning this butter-smooth, yet somewhat grammatically whimsical language.
All that would change, I am sure, once I start visiting Italy; at which point I would commence madly posting my travellogues!

Why do I want to learn Italian?

I have often been asked this question, by my friends, my husband, my classmates in Italian class, my Italian friends, even by Paolo when we first started working together. The implicit question is: Why does someone like you who lives in Singapore and has never been to Italy even once want to learn Italian? (My husband suggested Mandarin instead, it would be more useful, he said
)
Yes, of course, I would like to learn Italian because then I can talk fluently with my Italian editors and clients or my Italian friends.
I suppose my answers have changed over these eight months I have been learning Italian, but one thing remains for sure, I like the way Italian sounds. Like I have often said before, it is like butter on your tongue, and even when I see two Italians cussing at each other in a movie, I can't but help liking the rolling, up-and-down, somewhat musical notes it takes.
But it is also and even more so because once I learn Italian I would be able to understand the meaning behind all that wonderful sound especially when I listen to Italian music, and get the nuances of dialect when I watch Cinema Paradiso or Amarcord or a dozen other equally awesome movies, and maybe, just maybe, one day be able to read my much-beloved The Name of the Rose in the original.
