View Full Version : I need help please
Danno 09-18-2008, 02:44 PM My Italian landlord sent me an email and I need some help translating. I can get the most of it but some of the words I just can't find in the dictionary. He also is from Napoli.
Now he gives me some good news about his wife expecting a new baby boy....notizia bella invece e che Maria aspetta un bambino, ormai sono quasi cinque mesi, abbiamo saputo che e un maschietto saimo felicissimi per questo nuovo bambino. La mansarda e un quasi finita....
Gratzie mille

In May the brother of my dad, remember your neighbour, has died suddenly from a brain stroke, and it's a bad time especially for my dad. Now he gives me some good news about his wife expecting a new baby boy. Good news is that Maria is pregnant, it's already five months now, we knew it's a baby boy and we're really happy for this new kid. The mansard it's almost done.
Sorry for bad formatting and for any spelling mistake I could have made.
Danno 09-18-2008, 02:58 PM Gratzie Zidane!I couldn't find the word "ictus and cervello"
jeaniegina 09-18-2008, 04:08 PM Hi you guys. I was able to translate almost everything (except mansarda) without resorting to the dictionary!!! I must be getting better. I guessed on ictus because I knew cervello is brain and I related it to ischemic - as in transitory ischemic attack (stroke) and I vaguely remember some Latin. A lot of times, I can figure stuff out from context. That said - I can't understand a word when someone is talking to me!!! I need to see it in writing. I need lots of practice in verbal conversation.
Ronald82 09-18-2008, 06:48 PM i too understand almost all except 'mansarda', looked into a dictionary and it says 'attic', most probably when Danno left Napoli, his friend is still doing construction on the attic, magari...
ictus di cervello (i like this word!!!)
Zidanie5 09-18-2008, 06:56 PM Ictus al cervello is practically when a vein in your brain bursts, isn't it?
Ronald82 09-18-2008, 07:05 PM Ictus al cervello is practically when a vein in your brain bursts, isn't it?
in english its just stroke, the veins in the brain burst due to high blood pressure..so have to control salt intake!
Danno 09-18-2008, 08:13 PM Ronald you are correct, it is actually a third floor he was putting on top of his house. Very beautiful and molto caro! I guess he will use it for the new baby. I'm wondering if the baby was planned, they already had two others 7 and 13 boy and girl.
Eduardo 09-18-2008, 08:23 PM It says you still owe him 2 months rent and the cow no longer gives milk.
Danno 09-18-2008, 08:25 PM Zidanie, thanks for helping with translation. Here is my reply.
Ciao Tony , Maria, Giovanni, Rosanna and Joe, Suzi and I are so very happy for you. Was this planned?? I know you are excited to have another bambino running around the casa.
Maybe you can come visit us before the baby is born? We would really love to have you come stay with us.
I am so very sorry about your father's brother. He was so young and I know that his wife and family will miss him very much.
I had a heart attack in March and had a quadruple bypass. I was off from work for 2 1/2 months but I am fine now and still working. Suzi is taking very good care of me.
We really miss you and the family, give our best regards to your Dad.
Love , Dan and Suzi.
It will be interesting to see how heart attack is translated.
Gratzie mille for doing this.
He does speak pretty good english but I think he thinks I understand everything he says:confused:
Danno 09-18-2008, 08:26 PM Good one Ed, are you ready for vacanza?
Zidanie5 09-18-2008, 09:00 PM Zidanie, thanks for helping with translation. Here is my reply.

Just one question Danno, with best regards you mean "greetings" or "condolences"? In case you meant the latter replace "i nostri migliori saluti" with "le nostre condoglianze".

I forgot something.
My daughter adopted another little boy from Ethiopia, his name is eremiah, we call him ermy for short. He is 3 years old.

Now that you ask, I guess it would be better for "condolences" I'll add that . Gratzie
Zidanie5 09-18-2008, 09:12 PM Then Danno replace "i nostri migliori saluti" with "le nostre più sentite condoglianze", and add this where you want to put it:
"Mia figlia ha adottato un altro bambino dall'Etiopia, il suo nome è Eremiah, abbreviamo il nome in Ermy. Ha 3 anni."
Aliena 09-18-2008, 11:59 PM ictus cerebrovascolare = brain haemorrhage (often called "stroke" when not fatal.)
Zidanie5 09-19-2008, 01:04 AM Aliena, any remark to make on the translations?
:)
Danno 09-19-2008, 08:13 PM Hey , I like the new look!
Zidanie5 09-19-2008, 08:46 PM :)
But I don't like it so much, I seem ugly, uglier than I really am :(
I've been ordered to put this one though, and I must obey :D
jeaniegina 09-19-2008, 10:21 PM Wow, nipote Dan! Nice photo! I like it! One of these days, I may be brave enough to post my own photo. LOL
(And Katia is so cute!!!)
mhm... mhm... I'd not say "eccitati". We don't use "excited" in the way Americans do. I'd say... "emozionati" or "contenti". I know that 'eccitato' is the right translation of 'excited' but we use it mainly for sex... o sbaglio ?
Zidanie5 09-20-2008, 02:12 PM Well I often hear it also as a way to strengthen "emozionato".
I don't think it's only to be said regarding sex!
Danno 09-22-2008, 03:11 PM Jean, hey , looking at your photo with your first car, you pretty Hot! It's also your Birthday so you can put one up in your Birthday Suit?:D
Just kidding, have a great day.
jeaniegina 09-22-2008, 04:22 PM Thanks, Danno! LOL Yes I was HOT!! if I do say so myself. Unfortunately, that was many moons ago as they say. Since my son is 12 years older than Zidanie, you know I am no longer a spring chicken. :-(
Comunque, I am young at heart!!
Danno 09-22-2008, 06:51 PM Jean, we are about the same age and as Satchel Page once said," How old would you be , if you didn't know how old you wuz?" My oldest is 38 and youngest is 34.
Happy Birthday again.

This is the exact same thing in Spanish with English speakers speaking Spanish.
