Instead of egli/ella and essi.

egli = he
ella = she
lui = he - him - his
lei = she - her
loro = they
Loro = You plural formal
voi = You plural informal
esso/essa = it
essi/esse = they

"lui" and "lei" are used in spoken standard Italian. Egli and ella are used in written Italian literature not in standard spoken Italian.

Lei studia biologia, ma lui studia matematica. She studies biology, but he studies mathematics. (She is studying biology, but he is studying mathematics.)

Come si chiama lui? What is his name? Nobody that I know of says Come si chiama egli? or ella in spoken language.
Come si chiama ella? Sounds good to Spanish speakers ma non va.
It would be Come si chiama lei? What is her name?
Then to really confuse you we have: Come si chiama Lei? What is your name? Lei with a capital L.
What is your name for formal for both a man and a woman. This would be in context. For Come si chiama lei? you might sort of point to the person as you say it.


Years ago when I lived in Italy somebody told me that in several southern regions of Italy, the voi form of the verb
is used in formal conversation instead of the Lel/Loro form. It is used to address one or more persons. E credo che
they said that egli and ella were used in souther Italy. Forse.

Ricordati (Remember)that subject pronouns are most of the time omitted in Italian and Spanish, since the verb endings make the person of the subject clear.
Subject pronouns or personal pronouns are used to for emphasis or contrast. To be like a native speaker you don't want to always use the personal pronouns in front
of the verb when you speak.

Stai zitto! Non sento la radio. Perche non aumenti il volume? No personal pronouns needed. Be quiet! I can't hear the radio. Why don't you turn up the volume?

Come sta? Instead of Come sta Lei? Sto bene, grazie. Instead of Io sto bene.

Voglio andare a casa.(I want to go home.) Instead of Io voglio andare a casa. Voglio is understood as io voglio.

Personal pronouns are little words that replace persons or things: he, she, they, it, me, her etc. Personal
pronouns can play the role of subjects or be in a different role. For instance, in the sentence I eat a food,
I is a subject, but in the sentence That lion wants to eat me, me is the object.

Other pronouns (not personal) also replace nouns, with a more specific usage. For instance, this can
replace a noun, with a meaning similar to it (or he/she), e.g. in the sentence this is good for you.

Personal pronouns are the only part of the sentence in which Italian makes a distinction between masculine/feminine and neutre.
Neutre gender is used for objects, plants and animals except man; but this distinction does not cause any important change,
because all other parts of the sentence (nouns, verb inflections, adjectives, etc.) do not have a neutre gender, which is
simply handled by using either masculine or feminine.

Object Pronouns: Object Pronouns are either direct or indirect, and cannot stand alone without a verb.
The direct object receives the action of the verb directly while the indirect object is indirectly affected by it.
