Does any one have any idea where I can get the seeds here in the states? I don't think they can be sent thru the mail from overseas. I sure do miss salsiccia and friarielli. Gratzie mille!:)

Hey Danno, I just went looking for this and came upon this recipe printed in the New York Times http://www.nytimes.com/2007/08/29/dining/292mrex.html?ref=dining They are saying the friarielli is broccoli rabe. I think you can find it in the supermarket - maybe a specialty market like Whole Foods. Do you have an Italian Market near you? They might have it too.

Are you talking about the small peppers?

Ed, no, Friarielli is like broccoli rabe or broccolini but it definetly has a diferent taste and mostly only found down in Naples.
I know how to cook it, I just want to get the seeds so I can grow my own. I brought back some seeds but they are more like broccolini.
I make mine like the recipe from Jean only I blanch it for about 5 minutes and then drain it and then add it to the pan. It's really good and good for you!

We eat andy boy broccoli rabe at least once a week. My wifes mother had said that it might be small frying peppers. All good.

Ed, what is "andy boy"? Is that a brand name?
Enjoy the weekend.

Here in Naples there is the very famous "panino sasicc e friariell"
A sandwich with sausage and friarielli.

I don't know if I can say precisely what they are in English, they are similar to broccolini but not the same, they are just friarielli :D

Aliena do you know a good name in English to describe them?

Broccolini is the closest thing we have to it here in the states.I sure loved the salsiccia y friarielli.:) Now that we have that out of the way. How can I get seeds?
Gratzie!

Sorry Zid.. I didn't see this post until now. Friarielli.. sono molto simili alle cime di rape ma il gusto e'parecchio diverso e sono un piatto tipico della cucina napoletana.

As far as I know Friarielli isn't available in the UK and I suppose the closest to it is broccoletti, broccolini, or as already suggested, rape.. especially the top leaves of these vegetables - but they are not exactly the same and no matter how I try to prepare them, they just don't taste "right".

I remember when we were kids.. we would run into the house, starving and drooling, mid morning and asking when lunch would be ready. Zia would shout at us that we were eating her into poverty.. then give us a panino, sasicc e friariell or a big thick slice of pane cafone dipped into the sauce she had simmering on the cooker to keep us going.

Boy, that woman could cook! :D

it is really hard to immitate something when you don't have the original. Broccolini is the closest I have here in Virginia and it comes pretty darn close when I make it and I make it at least once a week. :D
Hopefully the seeds my friend sent me will do the trick.
When I was in Napoli and the Friarielli was in season, I would buy bags and bags of it, take it home and blanch it and then frezze it so I wouldn't run out in the off months. I'm so clever:rolleyes:

Thanks Aliena, I didn't know they don't have it at all there. Better late than never :D
