I know how you feel. My first private lesson in French was really frustrating. The teacher
wanted me to say some very very easy stuff like "The girl is pretty" etc. etc. Could not do it.

Beginning students of a second language need to go through a listen time period or silent time of anywhere from 3 weeks to 6 months before actually talking.(Unless of course you are a Spanish speaker trying to learn Italian in which case the listening period would be much much shorter.)

You also need what is called "comprehensive input" which is best developed through a
teaching method called TPR which stands for Total Physical Response. All new second languages
just sound like a bunch of garbled sounds until you can put meaning to the words. TPR puts meaning to
in this case Italian words. You get this meaning through following commands in Italian. Examples: Stand up please. Sit down. Go to the door. Open the door. Close the door. Open the window. Shut the window. Turn on the light. Turn off the light. Go back to your seat. Sit down. The teacher of course at first models all this or has a student who already knows these commands follow the commands while the rest of the students watch. Then later after the so called silent period the teacher can ask questions. Stand up please. What did you do? I stood up. John, what did Mary do. She stood up. etc. etc.

Eventually the words just start flowing out of your mouth like magica.
