Still something of a novelty outside of Nettuno and a few other places, but it's slowly growing.... SLOWLY.... Villa 04-01-2008, 09:48 PM Like basketball and American football in Italy. American football in Italy A national championship of American football is disputed since 1980 and Italian national team is often in top 4 ranking of national semi-professional teams in the world. The Italian(American)football league(in Italy) is organized much like its soccer counterpart, with teams moving up and down in classification. This past season, eight teams played in the top division, Series A1, while 41 teams played in the next two divisions, Series A2 and Series B. There is also a youth league with 13 teams that use many of the Americans as coaches. Basketball in Italy (pallacanestro) is a sport gaining rapid popularity in Italy, although national teams have existed since the 1950s. The nation's top pro league is called Serie A (basketball):[2]it is widely regarded as the third best national league in the world after the American NBA and Spain's ACB. In some cities, (see Bologna, Siena, Pesaro or Varese) basketball is the most popular sport. Kobe Bryant owns an Italian pro basketball team. Kobe a proposito is fluent in the Italian language having partly grown up there as a kid.
