A guy steps on the bus in Naples smoking his cigaret.
The driver tells him: "Hey!! No smoking allowed on the bus!!"
The guy answers him back: "But I just had my coffee!!"
Driver: ' Ho!! I'm sorry...go ahead!"

:)

This last visit (summer 2006) I noticed many more non-smoking places, and fewer smokers than I have in the past. And though I was still amazed at how many people still smoke, I am heartened to see that it's lessening.

Smoking after coffee (and after anything else) I understand, but maybe the man should wait for the next bus!

I'm afraid the law against smoking in public places hasn't caught on very well in Italy. A good example is at my university in Rome. During my 'anatomia artistica' lesson the prof will smoke about 4 cigarettes in the space of 2 hours.. She doesn't even bother to go outside! She just opens the window slightly and carries on talking and then picks on someone to go all the way downstairs and get her a coffee!!!
A few years ago in a small town 'Polla' in the region of Campania, I fractured my little finger and needed an Xray... All the doctors there in the department were smoking, something that would never happen in a million years in England!!!
I suppose smoking is part of the Italian culture...
