I'd like to get some idea about medical insurance as a staff benefit, i.e. do many Italian workers have private medical insurance paid for by their employer? Any personal knowledge or a pointer to a good source of info would be welcome.

No usually your employer pay taxes on you...
the taxes includes the medical insurance...
but meny people are turning in to the rivate system also because it's so hard to get a contract job that without a private insurance you don't go so far...

Basically, if you're hired as an employee, you are entitled to the State Health Coverage. You still must find the local Dr. near your office to get into the system and pay a 'ticket' (whatever that means).
But, keep in mind, to get just a mammogram in Rome, for example, the waiting list is about 8 months.
So, most people go to private insurance cos. and waltz right in private doctor's offices.
I used AXA-PPP but, quit & will transition to Italian system, so watch this spot.
Thing is, if you're here on vacation, the hospitals will treat you -- free (just like in Sicko). My problem is going back to the USA. You can lose your house and savings should anything happen. So, I'll take out traveler's insurance unless anyone else has a better thing to suggest.
