Happy Valentine's Day everyone! Although, to those in Italy the day has already passed... I was thinking about this "holiday" today and realized I really don't know where it originated. I started doing some research and found that no one knows for sure when or where Valentine's Day became a holiday.
Most people have narrowed it down to two people to which the holiday is honoring: Valentino di Roma and Valentino di Terni. Some scholars even believe the two men to be the same person.
I'd like to think that Valentino di Roma inspired the tradition. Apparently this brave man went against the wishes of Claudius II, the Roman Emperor at the time who was enforcing a law that young men in the military should not be wed. Guess they believed that soldiers who were married would lose value. Weird! Anyway, Saint Valentino secretly wed couples according to legend. He became a martyr, not neceAnyone know anything else about either of these Saints? I've found it all really interesting so far...
