I am having difficulty finding websites that show mens fashion. Everything i come across is for women. I do find the sites showing models in clothes no real person would wear on a daily basis. I'm curious as to where i can find a site that shows the latest mens fashion styles from Europe (remember, it has to be clothes that people actually wear in public :-)). Can anyone help me out? Thanks

Thats a great idea. Why not dedicate a portion of the site to current fashion styles in italy, both men and women. I know there are portions of the forums, but i really didnt find much. Anyone else like this idea?

Unfotunately most of the people interested in fashion are women and I do not know and male fashion expert.
But it is an excellent idea to write mor about men's fashion

I will see how I can set up an area more specific about men's fashion -

The fashion area is at

www.lifeinitaly.com/fashion/

In any cse any suggestion on how to improve the website is welcome

I was in fact thinking of doing an article series on men's fashion just like I did on women's skirts.

Things to wear for the modern urban male while at work or at play, the sort of clothes suitable for each body type, the trends for male clothing and how to adapt them to daily life, and also accessories and grooming tips.

I'd like to do the same thing for women, and maybe have a fashion advice column where people can write in with their fashion queries and we can respond with answers and pictures.

Che ne pensi?fammi sapere:)

Hi, yes, I am waiting for a word from Paolo, and if he is ok I can start writing. I have already written a few articles on the site on men's suits, on Brioni and Zegna, and am full of ideas for a full-fledged men's section once Paolo gives the go ahead....he has written about it to me already:)

Hi Bubbles and Guido,

This is a great idea. When my husband and I lived in Rome, we bought him great clothes. It was so much fun to shop there because the clothes are more fitted and he is tall and lean. We even splurged on a a custom-made suit as a graduation present. It is classic and will never go out of style.

I would love to have a section we could go to for ideas to stay current on Italian fashion.

In Rome. An Italian friend hooked us up with his tailors. They let us choose from several bolts of fabric, took measurements, did 2 or 3 fittings along the way and WOW - a gorgeous custom-made suit. Truly a splurge though we probably paid about half of the price to have one made in NYC.

Hi Martha,

I finally started out on the series of articles on menswear: the first one on men's neckties (http://www.lifeinitaly.com/fashion/ties-italian.asp)

I know it is a little later than expected, but better late than never, right?:)

Hi Bubbles,

I loved this article! You did a great jobI If only men would dress up more here in the States. The casual dress code is so boring! I love seeing a man dressed well. Great photos too!
Keep 'em coming!

Thanks Guido and Martha:)
I am in the process of doing a whole series. But the problem with these articles is that writing, finding pictures, and formatting the whole lot takes days!

Dan has done a great job on putting them up, so a whole lot of the credit goes to him too:)

I'm seriously thinking about bying a Prada men's suit before going on my job-hunting trip to Italy. It's expensive as hell, and really out of my price range, but it seems that in order to be taken seriously, a nice suite is necessary.

Hi Marcello,

Just remember that for a good suit it is more important to get a good fit than a good brand. Yes, good suits do not come cheap, but sometimes even expensive off-the-rack suits may not fit you well. Try and take a friend experienced in buying suits to advice you when you go shopping, so you get a suit that flatters you.

Ok an important advice...
Prada is a brand wich follow the fashion.. you will pay a lot of money for something than in 2 years is out...

if you are going in Italy I suggest you to buy an hand made suit from the tailor...

believe me!! It will be yours forever!!!

OK, thanks for the advice, Guido and Bubbles. My wife and I was planning going suit shopping here in US this weekend, but now that you mention it, a hand made suit in Italy sounds very appealing. My only concern is that with the falling dollar I fear it would be very costly to do something like that.

Does anyone have any idea what I should expect to pay for a good handmade suite in Italy? Like Bubbles said, the brand or having the absolute latest in fashion is no necessarily that important; just as long as I look like a million bucks :)

A custom-made suit is definitely a good option, but it is also expensive. Martha says in this same thread that she paid 800 euros for a custom-made suit in 2003.It will be more expensive now.If that is within your budget, target custom-made.

If you already have suits that you wear in the US, a custom-made suit in Italy is very good.If this is your first suit, buy off the rack, in a safe color like blue or black.

A brand like Canali, Bonia or Valentino Rudi may not be too high priced.

What suit you buy also depends on your figure. If you are on the slimmer side, most of the American brands will not fit you well, because they make suits for heavy-built businessmen. Go for Italian or British brands, because their suits are slimmer.

Yo can also look at buying a suit that almost fits, ie is correct at the shoulder and sleeve-length, and then get it altered by a good suit tailor. There are some limits with what a tailor can do, but a lot of people will require some tailoring - not everyone gets a perfect fit right off the rack.

If you have a little money to spend, find the best tailor in town and go to them for alterations, not the in-house tailor at the store. The tailor should be able to give you an honest opinion. If they can't get it to fit properly, you simply return the suit to the store and get your money back.

Marcello,
where exactly in Italy? I can advice a tailer in rome if you are in Milan =)...

MarcelloInItalia

Well, I almos feel blasphemic ditching the idea of getting a specialmade suit while in Italy - it would have been fanstastic - but I just decided I couldn't afford paying 1200-1500 Euros with the way the dollar is going right now.

Instead I went ahead and bought one very nice looking suit, not designer, but tailored by my wife's favorite tailor. It may not last me 10-15 years like an italian one would have, but if it looks good (which it will, I'm pretty fit and slim ;) I think it might work out after all. At least that's the story I'm sticking to, so those of you who already have a handmade italian suit and could not even IMAGINE wearing something else, keep your comments to yourself :) (Sorry, maybe I'm just a little envious)

hi marcello

handmade italian suit are really expensive..
so in my opinion get one tailor made for you in the US which i think i far more cheaper than getting a prada suit..
sometimes the price-quality relation of branded stuff is not as god as we think..
a good fit it better than a branded one..
cheers

Are squared toe shoes still in fashion in Italy? I bought a pair in sicily several years ago and they are great. I am returning to Roma the end of May and wondered if I should pack them or leave them at home.

They are still wearing them in Tuscany as far as I have seen. Then again, they are also wearing florescent orange crocks(lol). You should have no problem. Most of the average people aren't that consumed with fashion. However, if you are still in doubt. Pick up a copy of Italian vogue.

Want to join your discussion about men's fashion. Read some articles in "fashion" thread. And i would like to ask men - what do you usually wear in everyday life? Are you interested in latest fashion ideas? Prefer to follow latest lines or classic clothes? Because we can talk long time about men's fashion but real picture is little different i guess...

Actually I have to say, since I live in london, that italian man don't follow the international fashion wave so much...

The young italian man maybe yes. They go often up to england or other big city to get a new vibe.

But the 30-45 years old are a bit retro... =D

Since I am here I changed my touch a bit...
I feel more continental.

Italian Vogue is a great source of information about fashion. I read it often and I find it useful.

Also you can "get" ideas from famous people. If you like/relate yourself to a particular celebrity, you can use his fashion ideas. Just google the person's pictures or go to that person's website.

Also it is good to know that there are men who care about their appearances... You will stand out in a good way, trust me.

There are not that many men here who care about it unfortunately :(. Flip-flops, sweat pants and square shaped t-shirts are very popular where I live (I even sometimes see people wearing flip-flops to the events like weddings)

The Russian mentions above the flip flops at weddings, Nuova Zelanda has taken it a step further - we've made it a national icon! Seriously.

We're in the thick of summer right now (:D) and guys seem to have started wearing pin striped shorts over here. Not relevant anywhere else? Haha

I think the US can compit with the New Zealand for a title "Flip-flops as the country's national icon" :D Sad though...

I didn't see pin striped shorts here yet.. Give us a few months :-) we're in the middle of winter here.

Happy New Year!
