Pass The Butter ... please.

This is interesting . . . . .
Margarine was originally manufactured to fatten turkeys. When it
killed the turkeys, the people who had put all the money into the
research wanted a payback so they put their heads together to
figure out what to do with this product to get their money back.
It was a white substance with no food appeal so they added the
yellow colouring and sold it to people to use in place of butter.
How do you like it? They have come out with some clever new
flavourings.

DO YOU KNOW.. the difference between margarine and butter?
Read on to the end...gets very interesting!
☺ Both have the same amount of calories.
☺ Butter is slightly higher in saturated fats at 8 grams compared to 5 grams.
☺ Eating margarine can increase heart disease in women by 53% over eating the same amount of butter, according to a recent Harvard Medical Study.
☺ Eating butter increases the absorption of many other nutrients in other foods.
☺ Butter has many nutritional benefits where margarine has a few only because they are added!
☺ Butter tastes much better than margarine and it can enhance the flavors of other foods.
☺ Butter has been around for centuries where margarine has been around for less than 100 years.

And now, for Margarine..
☻Very high in trans-fatty acids.
☻Triple risk of coronary heart disease
☻Increases total cholesterol and LDL (this is the bad cholesterol) and lowers HDL cholesterol, (the good cholesterol)
☻Increases the risk of cancers up to five fold
☻Lowers quality of breast milk
☻Decreases immune response
☻Decreases insulin response
☻And here's the most disturbing fact.... HERE IS THE PART THAT IS VERY INTERESTING!
☻Margarine is but ONE MOLECULE away from being PLASTIC..

This fact alone was enough to have me avoiding margarine for life and anything else that is hydrogenated (this means hydrogen is added, changing the molecular structure of the substance).

You can try this yourself:
Purchase a tub of margarine and leave it in your garage or shaded area. Within a couple of days you will note a couple of things:

* no flies, not even those pesky fruit flies will go near it (that should tell you something)

* it does not rot or smell differently because it has no nutritional value;

* nothing will grow on it. Even those teeny weenie micro-organisms will not a find a home to grow. Why? Because it is nearly plastic. Would you melt your Tupperware and spread that on your toast?

Share This With Your Friends.....(If you want to "butter them up")!

Chinese Proverb:
"When someone shares something of value with you and you benefit
from it, you have a moral obligation to share it with others.
So..., DO IT !

Margarine was used in Italian kitchen for few years in 80's ages.
now you can found some margarine but normally no one in Italy buy it, only foreigner.
Italy slowly slowly became a multicultural country, and you can found somnthing that italian people don't like; for example margarine, american coffee, peanuts butter, and others.

My grand mothers some time told me: "If I have to heat something that is bad for boy, at least I must have a good taste" :-) margarine

Is rubbish for taste and for health.

In Italy we use most olive oil than butter.
But in the north we use it in many recipes very strong and heavy :-))
famous recipe is "PIZZOCCHERI" a sort of pasta made whit many many cheese and butter came from Valtellina, a region in the North mountain border to Switzerland

Nice comparatives Jaqueline.

Jacqueline -

We use nothing but butter in our house, but we don't use a lot of it because we try not to eat a lot of fat.

Here is something else about margerine:

a lot of brands that I checked out in the past have soy in them. My husband is allergic to soy so we have to be careful to read the labels. If you check the labels, which we have to do very closely, a lot of products have soy.

So anyway, we switched to butter! It is much better for you and is more natural.

(Here in the US they seem to stick soy in a lot of things that don't really need it. Even chicken can make him have a bad reaction if they have been fed soy. It is very hard to deal with.)

But our main oil we use is olive oil. We don't eat much in the way of fried foods but if oil is needed in a recipe we use extra virgin olive oil. It adds a wonderful flavor.

Give me butter any day, provided it is lightly salted!
If anyone is in doubt just look at the ingredients on a pack of butter the next time you are in the supermarket... how much more natural can you get!

Olive Oil is very high in anti oxidants and can be taken as a medicine

A tablespoon of Olive Oil a day will keep the doctor away
heh heh

the only thing is that many olive oils (unfortunately even in Italy) are fakes, labeled as extra vergin but not. they are made of either refined olive oil ( a cheap way of getting a lot of tasteless, nutritionless oil) or actually other kinds of oil, like cottonseed or sesame. that substitution is illegal so you obviously won't find it posted on the "Ingredients".

you can usually tell by the price if an oil is good or not. $20 per 500ml bottle of Extra Vergin Olive Oil is very normal, $3 is not.

if you do manage to find a company that makes real Extra Vergin Oil then only use it on salads, or as a condiment for previously cooked meat or vegetables. If you heat Oil to saute` temperature it will kill the oil. "Kill" meaning take away 95% of the Nutritional value and destroy the flavor. if you are going to fry use the cheap stuff.

I have always disliked margarine and now, I have more reasons to. Butter is best for baking but rarely do I use it for anything else. I too am addicted to olive oil for everything needing oil. The fresher, the better!

Is this a compound butter that you are buying off of the shelf? Or are you making it?

If it is off of the shelf, you might want to read the label. I have found very few products that are actually what they say...AND Olive oil is trendy right now. SO....there are a lot of products that claim to be better for you because they are made with olive oil, but the percentage of olive oil in the product is actually very low.

If you are making it yourself, Bravo! If you would like to learn, jut let me know. I try to make as much of my own condiments as possible. They taste better, they are better for you. I can even teach you how to make your own butter...it's not hard at all.
