After having lived in this charming, medieval city for 4 months (and making frequent trips back to it every chance I get), I have a few personal favorites for dining I would like to share with you all. Stay tuned for more recommendations on where to shop and visit while in la mia carissima citta'!

RISTORANTI
$: inexpensive for a delicious meal
$$: moderately priced for an incredible meal
$$$: expensive but worthwhile

MAURIZIO AL DUOMO : $$ Via Del Duomo 78 - 05018 - Orvieto (TR) - Tel: (+39) 0763 343212

Contemporary meets traditional decor, delicious homemade Umbrian cuisine with a flair and the best secondi ever. Try their gnocchi di quattro formaggio, sliced roast beef w/rocket salad and cherry tomatoes and ANY of their red wines, including its own production of Sagrantino.

AL POZZO ETRUSCO : $$ Piazza Ranieri 1/A - 05018 - Orvieto (TR) - Tel: (+39) 0763 344456

Has a nice patio to enjoy an al fresco lunch, a late afternoon snack, an apperitivo at dusk or dinner in the cool of the evening. Their spaghetti alla carbonara is highly recommended.

BLUE BAR : $ via Garibaldi, 23 - 05018 - Orvieto (TR) - Tel. +39 0763.342510

Orvieto's WIFI hotspot. Recently re-modeled and re-designed interior makes way for a sleek, blue, modern yet elegant atmosphere to do everything from socialize with friends to having a business meeting for work. Cheapest prices in town, too! Delicious cappucchinos/espressos will only set up back less than 1 Euro.

MEZZA LUNA : $ via Ripa Serancia, 3 - 05018 ORVIETO - Tel. +39 0763.341234

In the words of Rachel Ray, YUM-MO! This Orvietano family has been delighting the taste buds of locals and tourists alike for generations. The portions are huge compared to the average restaurant in town, the prices so low you'd think something got lost in translation (Euro 4.5 to 7/8 for the primo, under 15 for the secondo) and the pasta, fatta in casa, is absolutely divine. Some of my personal faves: Spaghetti alla Carbonara, Gnocchi con Ragu, Fettucine con Pesto and Penne all'Amatriciana. Reservations are highly recommended for ALL NIGHTS of the week, as this place gets packed come dinnertime. Don't forget to try the tasty Zuppa Inglese dolce after stuffing yourselves with pasta... it is to DIE for! The bruschetta is also very good. The vino rosso della casa as well - ask for the Mezza Luna brand.

PIZZAREIA CHARLIE : $corso Cavour, 194 - 05018 ORVIETO
TELEFONO +39 0763.344766

Choose from a variety of both rossi and bianchi pizzas including La Bobba (sausage, mozzarella cheese and french fries), con Nutella (self-explanatory) and a huge calzone, fresh from the oven, made with spinach and ricotta cheese. Eat the whole thing if you'd like! Pizza prices ranges from 5-9 Euros and is by far the best in town. Live jazz music is always playing, and be ready to wait up to 40 minutes if need be: yet another neighborhood hotspot.

RE ARTU'$- Via loggia dei Mercanti, 14 Tel. +39 0763.393438

Opened in the spring of 2004, owners Claudio and Grazia have done extremely well in the promoting of homemade Umbrian cuisine with a medieval flair. Frescoes of knights on horseback, in shining armor appear on the walls of this restaurant, and the outdoor patio is so open and lovely that you can't help but to feel at ease with all things in life. The pizzas are good, but its the trattoria dishes that gets this place hopping. For those who like their nuts cracked, try the pizza con ricotta cheese and walnuts! Quattro Stagione is also another winner in my book. If you truly want an Umbrian dining experience, I suggest the pasta dish called Umbrichelli Arrabiatta (it's spicy!), a mixture of grilled lamb/beef/chicken with plaintain like veggies and a nice glass of Nastro Azzuro to wash it all down.

HESCANAS : $ Piazza del Duomo, 31, Orvieto - 05018

Hescanas is situated in a beautiful medieval building, with an incredible view of the famous gothic duomo of Orvieto. The perfect place for relaxing and contemplating the most important structure of Orvieto! Inside, you can take a quick coffee break, grab lunch-to-go (the BEST self-service in town, quality and price-wise), purchase a souviner and also visit a wine cellar and eventually a wine shop for the world-renown Orvieto Classico. The la spremuta d'arancio (ask for the BLOOD ORANGES) is truly amazing, as well as their gelato and caffe'.
