Ciao tutti

Si, io parla italiano. Imparando la lingua per due anni scorso! Perche ho decidere a traslocare a Roma per abitare e lavorare. mi amo Italia. Ho ventinove anni questo sabato!!!

Quick intro: My name is Derek, don't know if you read the profile or not, but I'm a italian travel specialist and have been working for an italian travel agency for 8 years now. Have traveled to Italy numerous times and always spend a week each in Roma & Firenze on each trip & have seen most of the country. Slow over the last 8 years I have become envolped with all things italian, music, fashion, cinema, culture, language, people, places. I have fallen for this country.

Last August I started to think about finding work in Roma, came back from a trip and starting dropping hints to my boss (who is italian and speaks the language) that I was considering wanting to work in Rome either for him or not. Sept 2006-August 2007 a year of thinking of nothing but how to make this happen. After once again returning from Italia this August. I decided to fully let it be known. That I for sure wanted to do it. I cannot think of anything else anymore but Italia.

After talking to my capo (boss), he agreed to make this happen. We are at the point now where, we are targeting a 1 year timeframe for my relocation. I have a few questions.

1.) My office here approves the relocation and our affiliated supplier in Roma will vouch for me and I will work out of their office daily to use the needed facilites. However I will be contracted for our agency here, not the italian affiliate. What kind of paper work do I need? My job-term in Roma is at least 3 years, with potential for being permanent.

2.) I'm doing this on my own, no family and a few but not many Roman amici. How easy is it to make friends in Roma? My parents are worried about me being alone.

3.) Should I look at an Italian Bank? or is it more affordable to pay the conversion charges and use my U.S. bank? My boss will pay my salary bi-monthly from here.

4.) Any good online longterm apartment sources? I will either live with friends of the agency family in Roma or need to find an apartamento in centro!

I look forward to this forum for the next year as I plan this trasfer! Who knows maybe I'll make some friends here!

Ciao!

Derek

About point 1) You should call the italian embassy in DC - tey re usually quite helpful. You will need a work visa ( thye give visa only 2 days a week, So call the before you go.

2) It should be easy to make friends -

3) The cheapets way to send money over $5000 is
http://www.lifeinitaly.com/real-estate/exchange-rate-savings.asp
I used them only 1 week ago and I saved quite a bit comparing to US Bank ( Bank of america ) - They can probably set up your employer with a special account so even smaller amount can be trsnferred at a saving rate ( since the total will surely be over $5000). Fill up the contact us and ask for Tom

4) For long term you will be better off looking when you will be there. In which area are you looking ? If you have a budject of Euro 900 including utilies I might be able to help but I do not know what you will find when there.

I am going to Rome Monday by the way

Ciao

Derek, you can open an account at the POSTA a postal account with only your passport, and you will not have all those crazy charges-especially the one you have to pay to close your account!
I know what you are going through. Its become an obsession right? For me too. This is a good thing- you need to absolutely follow through with your hearts call.
