Well - While I do suggest to tourists to get a place in Trastevere or in the center or Rome it is a different story for people who want to live there.
The center of Rome is a nightmare to get in and out by car - parking unless you can afford a garage - is really hard - friends need a permit to drive to see you - still nice if you are single and looking from night life every night. Not so nice if you have family - I personally like Monteverde Vecchio close to Trastevere - well connected to the center of Rome and where parking is easy plus has 2 parks: Villa Pamphili and Villa Sciarra. An important factor will be also the area where you will end up working - Some area are more difficult to reach than other. Do you plan to buy or to rent? ... In any case there there are a lot of variables to consider.
Ciao

Dear, Jj

What kind of home life do you enjoy? Noise, apartment life, the country quiet? A real house (villa) privacy....

I love the Appia Antica area and Via Cassia-... or on the outskirts in the "Castelli Romani" or out even further!
